Most of the "real hardware" I install on is hooked to good 'ole 4:3, it's also what VMware defaults to, & Bunsen is popular with users on old hardware, 4:3 most certainly needs to be considered.

If an image is made at 1920x1200, without important detail at the top and bottom, then it can zoom to 1920x1080.
Or if a 1920x1080 has "spare" space at the sides it will zoom to 1920x1080.
Just something to bear in mind when generating backgrounds. Also the grub screen is 4x3.

Those numbers.. my "best" (as in newest most powerful) laptop is 1024x768 (I think) & my second monitor that gets the linux machines hooked to it tops out at 1280x1024.. the 32 bit atom powered netbook is 16:9 (a really old re-branded Acer Aspire One) but it's getting so it's painful to use, a tad underpowered for FF.
I get what you're saying though.. I lack any talent for making wallpapers though.. about once every couple of years I'll download one or two, or just use whatever the OS comes with. After all I've *usually* got some application open full-screen over it anyhow. For how often I *see* wallpapers I could nearly live with xsetroot some plain colour.
So far I've liked the Bunsen wallpapers and many of the things suggested here

I laughed, because I cant live without a cool wallpaper on my desktop. Sometimes I download wallpapers that look cool and I can live with them for 10 minutes then I need another one, it sort of cascades rapidly into hours of endless restless searching. I know what you mean, sometimes the only sane background is a plain colour

^ Couple of points...
The highlight text is hard to read. Needs to be black?
The greenish-grey bg colour seems to clash a bit with the blue-grey elsewhere. Desaturate it a bit, or more of an ash-grey?
Apart from that it's lookin' really good

Noted and will implement, this was a very quick first-theme attempt with oomox.

I use a script to pull down whatever's most popular in DeviantArt's "landscapes" section. It used to change every boot, but that got too distracting so now it's every third. The core (needs xmlstarlet) is
PICNAME='deviantpic.jpg'
url='http://backend.deviantart.com/rss.xml?q=boost%3Apopular+in%3Aphotography%2Fnature%2Flandscapes+max_age%3A24h&type=deviation'
wget -q -O- "$url" | xmlstarlet sel -N media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/" --template --match '//item[1]/media:content[1]' --value-of '@url' | wget -nv --input-file=- -O "/tmp/$PICNAME"
Then do whatever it takes to get it on your desktop.
...elevator in the Brain Hotel, broken down but just as well...
