Insight into the inner workings of a community-driven project like Debian. Nothing comes top-down from management, so rules have to be made to keep all decision-making transparent. This discussion is about adding a new procedure for dealing with packages that appear to have been abandoned by their maintainers:

KDE and Debian coming a little closer?
Debian Joins KDE's Advisory Board

For keeping up with Debian news, the mailing lists are good, though can be a bit time-consuming.

They have popcon for a reason.
Kinda begs the question why Helium doesn't ask about popcon, when #! did... Just sayin, been known to install it on purpose myself after the fact. Far less of a privacy invasion than Win 10, as long as the install is optional.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed...
If there's an obscure or silly way to break it, but you don't know what.. Just ask me

No idea. We didn't do anything specific to take it out. Something to keep an eye open for with the Lithium isos.

...the Debian project: Its huge share of packages that are abandanoned and/or not up-to-date and/or dysfunctional packages.... It'd be better to downsize, IMO.
Maybe they should make it easier to drop packages - after attempts to contact the maintainer, and appeal for Salvagers. There should be a list of packages in danger of being orphaned somewhere...

Debian package salvaging is now officially documented. Rescuing abandoned packages should become a little easier now that the process is clearly set out and salvagers - if they follow that - won't have to worry about being accused of hijacking.

@The Team, so probably a June release. Keep it in mind, we should have Lithium ready by then or shortly after.

The system tray - at least as we know it - is on its way out.
This is not recent, but it was news to me anyway.
A note by a radio player, Goodvibes:
It’s possible to launch Goodvibes with the --status-icon option. In this mode, Goodvibes will not display a main window, but will instead add an icon to your notification area (also called system tray).
This is a kind of legacy feature, and it will be removed from Goodvibes at some point in the future. This is not supported by the toolkit (GTK+) anymore...
Led to "gtk_status_icon_new has been deprecated since version 3.14" and "GtkStatusIcon has been deprecated in 3.14. You should consider using notifications or more modern platform-specific APIs instead."
Debian Stretch is on gtk+3.0 ver. 3.22 and Buster is 3.24 at the moment and the general opinion seems to be that support for the systray won't be dropped till GTK4, whenever that arrives in Debian. So we needn't worry right away, and anyway it's mainly an issue for package developers (er... tint2's o9000?), but something we derivative assemblers ought to be aware of.
The current systray is dependent on X, so a shift to Wayland would mean a change to something else anyway. KDE/Plasma moved away from the Xembed-based systray some time ago: "System Tray in Plasma Next" and there seems to be a replacement on its way in Debian called Ayatana AppIndicator.
EDIT: This about appindicators in Ubuntu: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperien … rs#Summary
Hmm... BL a few releases down the line might be quite different...

live-wrapper is supposed to be the next generation live-system builder after live-build, and I think is now being used to build the current Debian live images.
Live-wrapper is a wrapper around vmdebootstrap.
Vmdebootstrap has been deprecated by its creator and is going away.
Live-wrapper was last updated more than a year ago.
BunsenLabs will continue to use live-build for a while.

Joking aside, is live-build being developed ATM, and, if so, does it look like that will continue for a while?

Yes, updates are going in regularly - the latest was in September: https://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/ … _changelog
I don't have inside knowlege of Debian politics, but it looks as if live-build is going to be around for some time. A lot of people are still using it.
(Have to shut down now, so sorry can't continue this discussion till Friday.)

Anyone using the nginx server?
Debian Security Advisory DSA-4335-1
Three vulnerabilities were discovered in Nginx...
For the stable distribution (stretch), these problems have been fixed in version 1.10.3-1+deb9u2.

Voting is open for the Debian Buster artwork till Jan. 6th 2019.

The result won't affect BL Lithium directly, but our Art Department might take hints.

The submissions are really weak this time around. I think Moonlight is my favorite, and I think I would change it immediately, same as I did with Spacefun. A couple of other interesting submissions there, and I think I'd feel the same about them after installing.
Curious to see what the devs will do. Pull in a "ringer"?
