6.8gb iso, can it be more bloated?

I have downloaded larger ISO's.  big_smile

Hard pass not only because of Erik, but the AI slop.  It can take a flying leap.

Yes, even the standard Ubuntu install iso is over 5 GB now. The times have passed when you could be reasonably certain that a distro's ISO would fit on a standard DVD. Some of the RedHat clone ISOs are 9 GB or even 10 GB.

Personally, i haven't used Ubuntu in decades, but i think whoever going to try from scratch, Ubuntu like many other distros offers bare-minimum possible where we can start.

openSUSE it have JeOS equivalent.

Mini-ISO is my favorite way to install use an OS.

Edit: corrected Ubuntu MiniISO links to current snapshots, not archive ones.

You must have bailed pretty early if you haven't used it in decades.  It's only been around for 2.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I'm currently posting from ExTix Deepin 26.5, which I downloaded a while ago but wasn't able to burn off to a USB drive (which I can now, with the aid of Balena).

If you like AI agents there's a good one built into Deepin in the form of UOS, but if you don't need one (and I don't), it's difficult to turn it off.

On the plus side, ExTix Deepin runs very well from RAM (which is unusual for a dIstro with an ISO larger than 5 GB), and Deepin's file manager is very good; it loads instantly and offers you the option of opening a folder with either read and write permissions to any of the writable files (e.g. text files) it contains or just keeping them as read only, which is useful.

It looks to me as though a lot of thought has been put into Deepin, it's just a shame that you have to deal with the AI agent whether or not you want to (why don't they provide an option to turn it on or off when you load it up?).

I ran away early from there as i felt i had to leave for #! which would mean better experience. As #! ended one day, other doors opened.

Plasma? ?

Not too exciting, but just threw Linux Lite on an older notebook for the bro-in-law.  Replaced Win7/10, and it's working great for him so far - another Linux distro convert.

I have installed Trixie with Plasma on a cheap-o HP Laptop 15 laptop that sports a weak 2-core AMD A6 CPU. Windows ran like a dog on that thing but Debian breathed new life into that laptop. Now I repurposed it into a netbook-type machine that I can take with me when I travel.

Linux Lite I could test on that machine as well.

Excellent! I'd like to see some sort of a comparison test between Trixie and Ubuntu 26 (on which Lite is based), to see which one is more suitable for desktop use. I've got Ubuntu 24 (Bento respin) on my hard drive and at the moment I don't really see the point of upgrading to 26, but that may change.

[Edit: add to that the latest version of Debian, 6.0 (Excalibur?), which was released recently.]

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I'm currently in Bento antix 26 (Melodie's new respin), and am trying to make it as lightweight as possible and yet with most of the features I need so that I can snapshot it and then burn it off to a DVD.

AntiX seems to be a lot more stable in its current incarnation no 26) than earlier ones have been.

One thing it (mysteriously) doesn't have is antiX's control centre application, which is useful to me because one of its modules makes a very effective way of making a connection to my smartphone. I must ask Melodie soon why she removed it.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Slackel Mate, which is based on Slackware Current, is now up to the beta version of its latest (9.0 release, and despite the bad experience I had with the last Mate version (7.7), when it wouldn't install, I've given this one another go and am pleased to say that so far I can't see anything wrong with it.

It comes with a good selection of software (LibreOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird, Gimp, SMPlayer and Viewnior etc.), and I think it's a worthy addition to your hard drive if you want a Slackware-based distro with Mate as your window manager; Mate doesn't come as standard with either Slackware Current or Official.

It doesn't come with the excellent Conky setup that you get with Slackel Openbox though. so that may still be your better bet if the devs release a 9.0 version of that one.

Edit: problems have arisen unfortunately. I was unable to save a document I was working on  in LibreOffice in any other form than read-only, not even in the /tmp folder. This may not be Slackel's fault because I couldn't do it in LibreOffice in Slackware Current either; it could be a problem with the way LibreOffice is packaged in for the Slack current repositories.

I need to do some further investigation into what is going on.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Bought a Linux magazine last week, as I sometimes do, and it came with a two-sided cover disk, each side for a different distro; Voyager 26.04 and Ubuntu Budgie 26.04. Well, for the first time since I've been buying magazines with distro cover disks neither would boot on this machine (apart from in safe mode, which I don't much like because it's quite restrictive), so this could be the beginning of the end for this computer and I may have to start looking for a new one soon. It's fourteen years old now so I can't really complain.

At the moment I'm posting from Fluxbox+, an MX respin which works very well now that I've made a couple of changes to it. Unfortunately its days are numbered too since it's based on MX23 and won't keep updating for much longer.

Wow! Hard to believe this thing (Linux magazine with distro disks inside) still exists today.
