Yes, even the standard Ubuntu install iso is over 5 GB now. The times have passed when you could be reasonably certain that a distro's ISO would fit on a standard DVD. Some of the RedHat clone ISOs are 9 GB or even 10 GB.

Personally, i haven't used Ubuntu in decades, but i think whoever going to try from scratch, Ubuntu like many other distros offers bare-minimum possible where we can start.

openSUSE it have JeOS equivalent.

Mini-ISO is my favorite way to install use an OS.
