In typical British style, we're confused, unsure, and late.

I find the comment a bit funny, but is it accurate at all? Is that typical British style? Isn't that then also modern US and Australian style?

That kindof ties in with what I know.
An expatriate Brit told me this:

If you ask someone "How are you", and in perfect British manner they answer "Fine", what they really mean is this: "F*cked up, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional".

So true - but not only for Brits.

Anyhoo, my condolences.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Retrocomputing continues.

irny.jpg

This win2k actually has a modified kernel (by blackwingedcat) that lets it run Firefox up to the pre-quantum series (have yet to try). The last version officially supporting win2k was Firefox 12 (pictured). Fast (emulated) graphics and virtIO only work starting with winxp. As such, the graphics and I/O performance is abysmal. BL still can be opened, but only because I haven't turned off the old/weakish SSL ciphers yet. A lot of other popular sites like github.com don't work with SSL anymore. Kind of surprised that the Let's Encrypt CA root is known to Firefox smile

irnt.jpg

Haven't yet managed to get Win ME to connect to a network (none of qemu's network adapters works out of the box; looking for oooolllldddd win9x drivers now). Plus, the graphics card doesn't work right with any of the mulated adapters (yet), it's locked to 640x480x16. win9x sucks so much when compared to winnt; Linux in 2000 was already much better on the desktop; and remember winme was released as late as 1999! MS sure did embarrass themselves here.

Haven't gotten win98 and win95 to install yet (even with seperate boot disks).

It says here what drivers are needed but the links are dead.

Installing Office and later version of Ie updates a lot of libs.
The first version of win95 didn't even had NSA backdoors. smile

To go back off topic, back to on topic (damn, this is the worst movie sequel ever)...

My first computer, Windows XP. My last Windows computer, XP on the same unit. That's when I accidentally erased the restore partition and the Windows partition from the drive that wasn't backed up. I did it installing Feisty Fawn, I think.

Best mistake I ever made.

winxp was pretty good at the end though (starting with SP3).

winvista was the OEM OS on my first laptop (Toshiba Satellite A????) and it wasn't all that bad. In fact it worked pretty well! I liked the artistic direction better than what they did in the win7 aero theming; way too much intense blues and less greens there. The "watery" look of Vista is probably my 2nd favourite Windows look. Classic >> Vista Aero > Luna > Win7 Aero >> Win10 Whatever They Call It >>>>> Win8 Metro.

That reminds me; I'll probably do a Vista VM next. Now where to get that image without hissing the Jolly Roger.

I got it OEM installed in a new desktop at the time, and it was an excruciating ordeal. Machine came with a spinning rust drive (7200rpm) and the amount of disk I/O Vista put the thing through, well let’s just say I took a flashlight and shone it into the case to check if there were insects having an orgy. Just trying to recall that noise is making my teeth hurt now. Revolting thing, that operating system. Wiped the drive and Linux’d it on the first weekend after purchase.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

My Windows lineage at home after I turned to NT kernel:

  • 2002 Windows XP

  • 2010 Windows 7

  • 2018 Windows 10

I find their every odd release, well, odd.

UI wise, I had the most fun with Windows XP because of all the customizations that were available. My favorite was Chaninja theme, apart from traditional square-y w95 look.

There was some pretty nifty hacks for winxp back in the day, cant remember them now but had a lot to do with messing with the registry. I think i paid for MS once and the rest just pirated their shit until i found linux.

I did not intent to scare you.
There is a possibility. Currently MS is sitting on both chairs, and they will continue to do so while they have a customer for Linux.

Did some of those settings with the registry but I forgot all of it.

People are filthy. We shed, we secrete, we have microscopic bugs crawling all over us, we fling tiny particles of spit when talking to each other. Doesn't matter who you are are where you're from. Favela slumster, Baden Baden poshster, Berghain punter (though these are extra nasty, I'll give you that) - all are disgusting. Not even OpenBSD devs auditing code naked in a hermetically sealed room are exempt.

Self-centered, self-entitled and uneducated. Racist. Sexist. Class-ist. Age-ist. Drugged out, money hungry, dopamine and opiate addicted and reality-TV addicted and social-media addicted and celebrity addicted escapists. Enraged by the fake news fed to us, delighted by the SuperBowel (sic),

Fake jingoistic and screw the rest of the world.

So there's that.

My favorite... How about saying that religious people are something-something? Hypocrites, fake Christian. Not one word of "Do Unto Others" or "Judge not, lest Ye be judged" or "Love Thy Enemy". Did you see the latest news? The Mormons have amassed 100 BILLION USD!!!!! I call moderators to clean (delete) this up a bit.

I'm inclined not to. Yes, this is a political/class warfare/general comment on the state of human civility tangent, but given world events, I think that this civil, reflective thread-tangent is healthy. If that changes, I'll definitely shut it down or recommend that another Mod shut it down.

I'm American and live in America, I'm criticizing the US. @twoion is German, lives in Germany and is criticizing Bundesrepublik Deutschland, our statements should be allowd regardless of if you agree or disagree.

With a plea and a threat that this discussion stays civil and reasonable, I vote for letting it continue.

It might just die off naturally, I'm not sure how much social-media outrage at the state of the world actually correlates to in-real-life outrage in the US or in other countries (narrows eyes at Australia). Obviously, Hong Kong is different.
