Sorry if I shouldn't be posting on a RESOLVED thread but I solved this issue rather simply. I created a .desktop file with the following:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=nitrogen restore
Type=Application
Exec=nitrogen --restore
Terminal=false
Icon=nitrogen
Comment=
NoDisplay=false
Categories=Utility;

and put in in my autostart folder under the .config folder in my home directory.
I logged out then back in and it seems to have solved this problem.

^this works. There is a slight delay in loading the wallpapers at boot up but it may not be noticeable in faster computers.

There is also another fix suggested here. However it requires you to make changes to conky.

I've also had good luck with moving the nitrogen statement to the very end of the openbox autostart file and using the command:

(sleep 2s && nitrogen --restore) &

Also, the link you posted is just a 3rd page of the discussion and it isn't pointing to any particular solution. I am not sure what you meant.

Yes, the exact same issue and solution was posted months ago. Thought people might want to read that whole page but the punch line is #57. Just trying to help. Since then I have been able to delete the custom .desktop file and just edit the autostart file for openbox, and nitrogen has been restoring the background without any problems ever since. At least on my machine
