Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

A bunch of people giving their first impressions of BL - some favourable, some so-so. Some like the default appearance, one thought it looked like a toothpaste advert. My biggest takeaway was that we really need to improve our documentation so people can find all the things they say aren't there.

Yesterday I noticed that DistroWatch has added a review to our summary page. I can't remember if it's been posted here, so...

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

^It has, by you: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 247#p76247
But it was quite a good review, and did raise some valid suggestions for improvement.
(The reviewer was clearly a fan of martix's bl-obmenu-generator, he mentined it 14 times!)

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

Well I guess people don't expect manual menu editing these days, in fact if you install openbox on top of xorg in buster,  without blocking recommends, you get a dynamic menu by default. Maybe not so fancy as that one, but at least fully functional.

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

And we've now got the JGmenu developer on the team to help us integrate that one, which looks quite promising, as it can also emulate a normal OB menu. cool

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

This is not a review, but it didn't seem to justify a thread all to itself, so I'm posting it here:

BunsenLabs has a bit of a profile in Debianland. Apart from our derivative status, BL's contribution of statistics to PopularityContest is greater than Devuan's, or Ubuntu's (latter extremely small actually). See "Statistics per distributions reporting to Debian":
https://popcon.debian.org/

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

^ very interesting.
I've been wondering if "Derivative Status" is in any way official, if there's a concrete set of rules, how a distro gets on that list or how it would get kicked off again even if it's still based on debian...?

And why does Ubuntu contribute so little to popcon? Their graph should be sky high compared to all others.
Disabled by default in favour of their own software?

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

There is a derivatives census page that anyone can add their distro to: https://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Census
But by the type of info requested it would soon become clear just how close it was to Debian. Still, the definition of "derivative" is quite loose and welcoming, shall we say. They don't seem into kicking distros out:
https://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives
https://www.debian.org/derivatives/
"Debian welcomes and encourages organisations that want to develop new distributions based on Debian."

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

ok, thanks for the extra info.
It seems too loose to call it "status"; but that's just me quibbling over words.
It's nice that they explicitely encourage derivates.

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

We did actually get a mail from the guy who looks after the derivatives mailing list, inviting us to add a page to the derivatives wiki, but it is indeed pretty loose, and our "status" as a derivative is basically the fact that we're based on Debian.

I mainly wanted to draw attention to the fact that "BunsenLabs" was quite prominently visible on the official Debian popcon page.

So what does it mean? Many users, and most of them don't disable it?
And why has Ubuntu so few? Surely it's more popular than BL...

That "BunsenLabs" is quite prominently visible on the official Debian popcon page. People who go there might notice it. That's all.
