Re: Wayland and openbox

This doesn't relate to BL but ...

Here's a bit about Lubuntu's future:

Lubuntu will be switching to Wayland by default for 20.10.

We are going to do this by porting Openbox to use the Mir display server, Drew DeVault’s QtLayerShell, and other associated bits.

Using the Openbox (3.5.2) session of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS but very interested in BL :)

Re: Wayland and openbox

If Openbox can be ported to native Wayland that would be a great thing. Wayland does have a lot of promise but still quite rough now. To me Wayland is the future of the Linux/Unix desktop.

that's basically what this thread is all about; no need to re-iterate it.

i'm sure we would all love that, but afaiu porting it to wayland would mean essentially rewriting it, and the current maintainers don't feel the itch to do that.

therefore we also look for alternatives.

however, if you open your eyes and scroll just a few posts up, you will see that someone is working on porting it.

Re: Wayland and openbox

Yeah, if we can hold on a little bit longer, it looks as if these adventurous devs will find workarounds for most of the issues that are likely to affect BL. Things like:

Lubuntu Newsletter wrote:

Q: What about people with NVIDIA graphics cards?
A: More details to solve, but the plan is to get this working with those graphics cards by that time.

By "a little bit longer": maybe one more Debian release?
