maybe not exactly, but I have seen many, many threads about VLC being problematic on debian-based distributions.

We've used vlc as the default media player because it's what CrunchBang used, and because in general it "just works".
That said, I don't think anyone will argue that mpv is a superior player, even though it does have a very minimal interface.
Another option among many, if you really want GUI settings, is smplayer. I've used it before and it seems very stable.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

smplayer is a front-end, the backend can be mpv or mplayer (possibly more options).
so, it combines "user-friendliness" with the superior technology of mpv!
