Dear contributors,
I am Natnaree Asavaseri and currently undertaking a research internship at Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan. As a part of my research, I am analyzing the impact of Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub.
I would like to conduct a survey to understand how developers perceive the Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub, especially from contributors to Linux distributions and BSD families. So please consider voicing your opinion by allowing us up to 5 minutes to complete our short survey.

We would like to remind you that participation in this survey is completely voluntary and your identity is hidden for anonymity. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

that's the third time now.
not impressed, either.
if at least it wasn't on google forms.
come on, some good old research leg work!
letting google do the lifting in itself creates bias about the topic asked, because google is involved in these things.

Answered, though without email address FWIW.
As far as I know, Google is not involved in either GitHub or Microsoft.
@ohnonot I suppose it depends on exactly what you mean by "these things".

well to me going away from github was no choice at all when i heard that microsoft would take it over.
the biggest competitor (the one that A LOT of people migrate to from github - mostly small/medium projects i guess) is gitlab, it seems.
gitlab is using google at least for some of its stuff.
i retrieved that link a few weeks ago, then they were also still using microsoft azure, but now it seems they abandoned that in favor of more google.
as of now this starts to look a lot like a MS vs Google thing.
i guess similar situations apply to the other large competitors.

GitLab's just another company.

Exactly! All the fuss over one company vs another. Arch had some great take on this issue.
MS, Google, Apple, aren't the enemy. Are going to stop driving that Ford, Chevy, etc because its a money making cooperation?

It's different https://www.hcs.harvard.edu/pnw/microsoftjoke.htm and it is about trust (largely). Also imho github is Ferrari and not just some boring Ford (so that would be another big difference).

So it breaks down a lot?

^ Well yeah, this orange to apple comparisons don't really hold well.

People are upset over nothing yet. What has MS done that merits the concern? Just the fact that MS bought Gitlab has caused hubbub of phantom issues.
What is the problem? Where is the problem. I don't see anything MS has done regarding Gitlab that has caused such concern.
Name the issue.

I don't think MS will do anything drastic, at least for a couple of years, because they don't want to scare off the huge GitHub user base (includes some Debian packages).
By the time it starts to look iffy there might well be a better option available...

edit1: alright, let's try to answer these questions.
i'm not upset - i'm simply not going to use github for my own stuff anymore.
i was already teetering on the fence when github changed their privacy policy a while back, now it's no choice at all really.
as to "What has MS done that merits the concern?" - i think history can answer that. how old are you? do you need links to some articles?
edit2: oops, you wrote gitlab - i assumed you meant github?

the result is clearly favourable to my own opinions, although i didn't participate.
afaics, op posted their question to +/- 100 forums and 38 mailing lists, and 240 participated.
that's not much.
i just wish there would have been another way apart from google forms, and/or that op would have taken the time to include some of the forum discussions in the survey results. not in the graphs obviously, but in the surrounding narrative.
Offline
Nice of them to post the results though - for the vast majority of these web-surveys you never hear what happened to your input.

True, however I can't grasp even a slight significance of the output, It means what it meant before, anything can happen with 8.5 billion moneys.

^ i wouldn't say that; what is clear and obvious to us forum dwellers, isn't fot the majority of people.
remember, the point was to explore the perception ("opinion"?) of a particular type of people (us, basically).
Nice of them to post the results though
yeah i forgot to add a little "thank you" to my previous post.
i think op handled that pretty well from start til end (despite my initial criticism).
