After getting a messed up VLC theme with Helium install (menu bar items all squished together, no visible dropdown, strange playback icon layout) I ran apt-get upgrade && apt-get install vlc.
The new version of VLC 3.0.2 looks just as bad.
It seems this was a problem before Helium was released (see here, comment #4), but I haven't found any other mention of it on the forums.
Tips, anyone?

You've missed our update that takes care of Qt theme integration, see https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-co … ssionrc#L9.

Thanks @Head! That solved it.
Only trouble now is VLC doesn't play videos (.mov, .mp4) properly -- just random flashes as the file plays. Audio on the video files and audio files (.wav, .mp3) work fine. Shall I open a new thread for this?

Yes, I think so but reboot first, just in case the problem disappears — a theme change seems unlikely to b0rk your video playback ![]()

Try changing your video output in the settings from automatic to xv to see if that makes any difference. Also try disabling the automatic hardware acceleration in the Input/Codecs settings.
Or you could run vlc from the terminal to see if any relevant error messages show up; it's quite verbose.

Thanks @stevep, changing to xv solved the problem. No new thread required...
