[SOLVED] Problem booting ISO from USB

Hi guys,

I've searched many forums, I've seen many movies and still can't find the answer so maybe here.
I'm trying to create bootable USB. The machine, where I'm trying to install, is laptop HP Pavilion. Recently I'm using W10 and Mint but I want to switch on bunsenlabs (I'm an old fan of Crunchbang wink). So, I tried to create bootable USB using Rufus (which I'm always using), unetbootin (which You won't recommending). What's the problem? USB is created without any problem but it doesn't boot - default system (WIN10) is starting. I tried two different pendrives, I also create bootable mint on each of these pendrives and no problem - all booting without any problems, so I guess my BIOS, UEFI settings are OK.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [SOLVED] Problem booting ISO from USB

https://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#write-usb

Hint: win32diskimager will apparently only list input files named *.img by default, while the Debian images are named *.iso. Change the filter to *.* if you use this tool.

Please note, that Debian advises not using "unetbootin" for this task. It can cause difficult-to-diagnose problems with booting and installing, so is not recommended.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: [SOLVED] Problem booting ISO from USB

Easiest, safest method would be to boot Mint, insert USB, and burn the iso with the dd or my preferred dcfldd command..

That only works if "DD" [sic] mode is selected — did you do this?

Also, have you tried disabling UEFI and enabling CSM or "Legacy" mode?

We have an experimental ISO image that should work with UEFI enabled:

I tried DD mode on Rufus but is the same thing. I also tried to play with UEFI and BIOS options but still nothing work. But, I've downloaded your experimental ISO!

I tried dd under terminal, I also download that experimental ISO - and I have a progress now! If I'll press F9 and from boot menu I'll pick up usb stick after few seconds it says something like boot image has no authentication or something like that hmm

^ now that again sounds like some sort of UEFI issue.

maybe it's time for https://wiki.debian.org/UEFI

Re: [SOLVED] Problem booting ISO from USB

Glad you got it working! Hmm if you have the booting problem solved, you may want to mark this topic as Solved and create a new thread for the wifi problem you're having. Just so we keep the two issues separate.

Re: [SOLVED] Problem booting ISO from USB

@j3rzu, please make sure you've investigated possibilities on your end, like being too far from the wifi signal or the cable company doing work in your area this week, and then open a new topic with a clear subject title if necessary. This makes it easier for people to find answers via a search engine.

I'll mark this issue as solved.  Thanks!
