Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Alpine Linux dual-boot installation notes

Reference: https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Insta … ualbooting

  • when installing, use `ROOTFS=btrfs setup-disks -m sys /mnt` [mutatis mutandis] to ensure that the initramfs is built with the required filesystem module

  • bootloader configuration also requires modules=btrfs [mutatis mutandis] to load the correct kernel module at boot

  • https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … sound_card does not work, the module index must be set as a kernel command line option, as per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … mmand_line

  • for Intel cards, kernel modesetting must be enabled for the desktop to load, see https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Intel_Video

  • the various mesa programs are not installed by the setup-xorg-base script and so must be installed manually (`apk search mesa`)

  • users must be added to the audio group (`adduser $USER audio`) to be able to access the mixer controls

I've just been bitten by these (and not for the first time, sadly) so maybe they'll be useful for somebody else.

That's one of my latest installations (done in late November), replacing my 42.1 installation. I went with KDE but later added Fluxbox to it. I'm also enjoying Antergos (with Openbox), also installed late last month.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

After comparing Ubuntu Unity with Ubuntu MATE and Mint MATE, I found that Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS uses less resources than Unity (either 16.04 or 16.10) and less than Mint MATE 18 or 18.1 on my now-aging System76 Pangolin laptop. It also boots and runs faster and is very stable.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I guess I am distrohopping, again. sad

After a year or more of using only Arch Linux, I installed Gentoo a few months ago to get a feel for working with and maintaining a source-based distro.

Today, I Installed Fedora 25 to take a look at Wayland. Fedora and Gnome/Wayland seem pretty cool.

I hope I can stop this madness, again.

Wiped my FreeBSD system because the Intel support is only up to kernel 3.8 (even in CURRENT) and my HD4600 needs at least 3.10 for the "TearFree" option.

^ Just looking at some of those distro names brings back memories... E.g. I just managed to try aptosid at the time when the project was half-dead already and the sid-distro basically not working anymore. There are names missing on the list though, e.g. Caldera. At least I know now where ututo's nick is probably coming from. smile

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I just got a new HP notebook PC. I tried Win 10 for less than 24 hours, then wiped repartitioned the SSD and installed Fedora with Gnome/Wayland. I don't usually go for a "heavy" DE, but my new system has 16 GB of RAM, so what the hell.

Installing Linux was much easier than I had expected. I didn't even have to disable UEFI secure boot. The process was exactly like installing on a legacy BIOS system.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I use VirtualBox for my distrohopping, but sometimes will install a distro on metal if I really like it. Among the distros I've tried and liked in VB recently are Ubuntu Budgie and Solus Budgie. Both performed well and looked great, but I wasn't tempted to run either on HDD. Another distro I liked was PCLinux, which I hadn't looked at in years. Although I ran the KDE version, it didn't feel bloated at all and was very responsive. I was tempted to install it on my laptop...but didn't.

So what am I running on metal? My wife likes Mint, so that's on the desktop PC. I'm running Manjaro Xfce on my laptop and Ubuntu MATE on the old iMac, which is in the living room as part of an entertainment system.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

@ratcheer:  Well, if you want a really heavy DE, then run KDE.

@g33zr:  I installed PCLinux (KDE) in a VM awhile back and was very impressed with it.  Not impressed enough to use it as a replacement for the then CrunchBang or now Bunsen Labs.  Long live Bunsen Labs!!  Yes, I'm a fanboy for the Bunsen Labs distro.  I tell everyone who might be interested in Linux about it.
