@Sector11 how about creating a new vanilla Firefox profile - no addons, no special config - and seeing if flash works there?
Good idea. I shall return.

OK, this is good/bad .. requires work: FF looks UGLY! (IMHO)
It's working ... what I did was go a little over board with johnraff's suggestion because I wanted a "super clean" start.

Two things really stuck out:
1. the warning in "aremv" section:
dpkg: warning: while removing firefox-esr, directory '/etc/firefox-esr' not empty so not removed
A README was there:
iceweasel (45.0esr-1) unstable; urgency=medium
* The iceweasel package was replaced with the firefox-esr package.
* Preferences under /etc/iceweasel/prefs will need to be copied manually
to /etc/firefox-esr.
* Other customizations under /etc/iceweasel will need additional manual
steps, through CCK2 or addons.

Interesting - first I recall seeing it.
Obviously since this is a 4th or 5th re-install of FireFox-esr I doubt there is anything there that I should be concerned with ... but in the coming days I will compare the thing.

Am I the only one that uses listbugs on Bunsen?

I do not think you should pay any attention to the listbugs output, any Firefox updates are pushed by the official Debian Security Team and should be applied by all users without delay.

I'm glad things are starting to work a bit, but what I meant by this:
@Sector11 how about creating a new vanilla Firefox profile - no addons, no special config - and seeing if flash works there?
was not to reinstall firefox but to run it with a vanilla user profile, ignoring all the stuff in your current profile (stored in ~/.mozilla). You can do this by:
firefox -ProfileManager -no-remote
and choosing "Create Profile". You can start up your new profile any time afterwards with:
firefox -P profilename -no-remote
The configs will go in a new directory: ~/.mozilla/firefox/<somenumber>.profilename
(The -no-remote option is needed to prevent firefox from trying to reuse a currently open firefox window.)
It can be quite useful to have several different firefox profiles available, configured differently.

OH I didn't know that. But buy taking the long way I learned a few things as well, but have your post above tagged for future use - if needed. Thank you.
