The current volume applet for Hydrogen is Volti, and it sucks did what we asked of it, mostly, and it was in jessie. Meh, let's replace it with pnmixer, the applet in #!.
Here are my unofficial backports until @nobody officially backports it and we iron out the icon fix needed. They are built from this pnmixer PPA (Trusty version)...
https://launchpad.net/~landronimirc/+ar … tu/pnmixer
64 bit...
https://dl.orangedox.com/vaTeD5fGC5iYiH … _amd64.deb
32 bit...
https://dl.orangedox.com/jeiIt0lWcvA83z … 1_i386.deb
Install via gdebi or dpkg. If you run this as-is the applet icon will be black. To fix this, download this icon pack, extract it and replace the 5 icons in /usr/share/pnmixer/pixmaps with these...
https://dl.orangedox.com/YYc7qXVFlorjdk … ons.tar.gz
Replace volti with pnmixer in ~/.config/openbox/autostart and logout. The pnmixer icon will probably still be black, right-click, choose "Preferences" and set the icon theme to pnmixer. If all is well, purge volti. You should see a small drop in RAM usage, volti is a hog.

Why not use volumeicon-alsa?
It works but the "Default" icon is black -- I've never looked into it 'cos I like grey panels but I'm sure you could fix that in a jiffy.

^ I didn't even realize volumeicon-alsa was available in Jessie. How did I miss that??

Unfortunately, apart from the invisible black icons, volumeicon-alsa had another bug of popping up double notification bars when using the scrollwheel to change volume. That one is less easily fixed, perhaps, and the main reason for the switch to volti.

Pic or it didn't happen. RC1, scrolling while hovering over volumeicon creates 2 (xfce-notifyd) notifications...
This might be related to the alsa-unmutes-but-pulse-doesn't bug, the levels in the scrot aren't in sync.

Is it really wise to add pnmixer since it is an Ubuntu ppa and not in the "Jessie" repos?

It isn't a PPA, but is a deb package built from those sources, to be compatible with jessie. That is how backports works. It is because it isn't in the Stable repos that it has been backported.

Ok I see, thanks for clarifying. Googled it, but not enough evidentely.

Backports are recompiled packages from testing (mostly) and unstable (in a few cases only, e.g. security updates) in a stable environment so that they will run without new libraries (whenever it is possible) on a Debian stable distribution
Backports cannot be tested as extensively as Debian stable, and backports are provided on an as-is basis, with risk of incompatibilities with other components in Debian stable. Use with care!
It is therefore recommended to select single backported packages that fit your needs, and not use all available backports.
(Just search Debian sites )

Right. I could have used the pnmixer git source and built a Debian package from that, but the PPA uses the same source and has already been "Debianized"

^ About Dolly's question; is the executable file pnmixer that goes in /usr/bin independent of Ubuntu ppa, if it gets built from git source?

Of course. It's independent of the PPA even if it's built from the PPA, as these files are. But at least the package will be recognized by apt, so you can remove it via apt and if a version comes into Debian jessie with a newer version number it'll get upgraded during apt-get upgrade.

Good to know. Thanks.

^^I added a bit to my answer.

^^ Well, Okay.
Most times, I don't trust these so-called upgrades. That's why I block the access to Apt for some apps. If the app works, then let it work. In a way, I have a lean mean system that way. I was using alsa mixer and gnome icon. Tint2 stays in autohide mode all the time. Laptop's red light comes up too, when the battery is 20%.
Thanks anyway for the info on Pnmixer.

Foolish, but that's discussion for another thread.

+1...I use the pnmixer deb from CrunchBang on all of my BL installs.

I also use the #! pnmixer deb (having tried and hated volti).
hhh: is this version a significant improvement on the #! version? (I don't want to replace it unless your current version is significantly better, and I'm feeling too lazy at the moment to just try it. Please don't tell me not to be lazy... my excuse is that I am an old man with two teenage kids, and energy comes slowly these days.)

I don't recall what version of pnmixer was compiled for #!, but you should use this backport as it was compiled against jessie and therefore may include jessie security patches.

@hhh What can I say? If I had my thinking hat on, I would have realised that.
Will update now. Cheers
Edit: It was version 0.5.1, btw.
