How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

I no longer have the volume icon on the top menu and I have no idea how to get it or the volume itself back.
And I did a search, but no apparent help.

I did find a thread on this here: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1869, but it looks pretty hairy and is not exactly helpful from this angle.

I did restart Tint2 and got the icon back, but still have a "muted" volume that I can find no way to "unmute".

UPDATE: The volume is back, but the icon is not.

Can anybody tell me a safe way to get the icon back in Tint2?

I went to the link in the rc file but it is a broken link...

Well done, you have found the correct solution for your problem smile

To summarise:

  • Comment out the <keybind key="XF86AudioMute"> ...</keybind>section from rc.xml, and any other references to the XF86* keys.

  • Purge xfce4-volumed

  • Install volumeicon-alsa from Debian stable.

  • In ~/.config/openbox/autostart replace volti with volumeicon

  • Logout/in and make sure volumeicon's hotkeys are set to the XF86* keys.

You will also have to create a file at /etc/asound.conf with the following content:

pcm.pulse {
   type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
   type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
   type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
   type pulse
}

Good luck!

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

PS some users have found volumeicon needs a certain amount of sleep in ~/.config/openbox/autostart. If you find it fails to autostart, but launching 'volumeicon' in a terminal works, try adding some sleep.
eg

(sleep 10; volumeicon) &

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

Okay, I am back on this with intent this time. Before, this was happening intermittently. And still is. And there seems to be no rhyme or reason, either. Sometimes it works fine. And sometimes no.

But LET ME BE CLEAR: this is no longer an issue of a missing icon. No, it is there. But what I have is NO SOUND.

Meanwhile there is no

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

What's the output of your

lspci -k | grep -A2 Audio

Also do you have pauvcontrol installed?  Run the command pavucontrol from the command line and see where your output is being directed to. you may have to play around with the Output devices tab and the Configuration tab...

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

Thank you very much. Here is the output:

roland@r0r0:~$ lspci -k | grep -A2 Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 050e
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel

And it appears that the pauvucontrol is MIA

roland@r0r0:~$ pauvucontrol
bash: pauvucontrol: command not found

Typo!   the command is  pavucontrol

It may very well be that it's just being sent to the wrong output like analog output or headphones when you may want speakers etc..

Also, not sure what you mean about those tabs. They are not there as far as I can tell:

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

I have BunsenLabs installed here. But it sounds like mine is not *even* having the stuff you expect?!?!

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

Ah, you still have volti installed... honestly I'd remove volti as it has had many documented issues. You can install volumeicon or just run with pulse audio. Pulse audio has it's own mixer:

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

So do I need to uninstall Volti? Or are you suggesting just doing a sort of switch? How do I get there from here?

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

Is there a post for switching from Volti to Pulse on here?

Re: How do I get back volume and icon?: SOLVED

Thank! I am going to mark this one as Solved, as I followed the directions on Scripts, Tutorials & Tips» Help! The systray volume icon doesn't work! to the "tee" and had instant success!

Thank you

To remedy this, we are now recommending a switch to volumeicon-alsa instead.
To accomplish this, first install volumeicon-alsa and remove volti and xfce4-volumed:
sudo apt-get install volumeicon-alsa volti- xfce4-volumed-
Then replace the startup command and remove the reference to xfce4-volumed:
sed -i 's/volti/volumeicon/' ~/.config/openbox/autostart ; sed -i 's/xfce4-volumed/#xfce4-volumed/' ~/.config/openbox/autostart
As volumeicon now handles the hotkeys, edit ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml and remove (or comment out) this stanza (lines 412 to 416, inclusive):
https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-co … c.xml#L412
Finally, create a file at /etc/asound.conf (as root!) [1] with the following content:
pcm.pulse {
   type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
   type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
   type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
   type pulse
}
Reboot to effect the changes, hopefully it should all work now...
