Well, BL isn't Crunchbang, and that guide is years old
One user has posted his BL method here

Hello Rudra, if you have a look and follow the links both ways, you might get an idea how I did it. If you are not worried about some hiccups on the way, you can change jessie to sid in in /etc/apt/sources.list and update and upgrade your install. I went Waldorf > Jessie > Stretch > Sid.

No, the way APT preferences work has changed fundamentally since that guide was written, amongst other things (machinebacon talks about HAL, this went by the wayside many years ago).
Only use sid if you are comfortable with a system that may break at any moment without warning.

where is machinebacon, anyway?

Thank you everyone for all the help and guidance .. I am now officially on "stretch" got a little scared with all the horror stories related to "sid" so kinda decided to play it a little safe .. everything is fine as far as i can see .. my only problem is that my primary .conkyrc refuses to load while .conkyrc1 loads and works just fine
the terminal output is >>
rudra@kratos:~$ conky
conky: Syntax error (/home/rudra/.conkyrc:1: '=' expected near 'no') while reading config file.
conky: Assuming it's in old syntax and attempting conversion.
conky: [string "..."]:138: attempt to index local 'settings' (a nil value)
the conkyrc file itself looks like this (parameters for both conkyrc and conkyrc1 are the same):

conky: Assuming it's in old syntax and attempting conversion.
You are using a conky v1.9 format with conky v1.10. Can't help beyond that though I don't use v1.10

I think the general concensus is that sid probably works better as a system than testing.
The trouble with testing is that if a broken package makes it into the repositories then it stays broken, sometimes for extended periods.
Experienced users will then start pulling the fixed (upstream) version from sid selectively [1]
During my brief time with Debian's development branches, I preferred to run pure sid with a repository line for the experimental sources to pull packages from there if the upstream versions were better (eg. Firefox) [2]

@OP: regular API changes are all part of the testing/unstable experience so better get used to this sort of thing.
In Arch, I have to re-jig my configuration files regularly

Thank you all for you help and guidance .. latest update is that i broke my system and after 10 long hours of trying to recover X i gave up and came back to BunsenLabs (Jessie) as a fresh install though i did try my hand at Sabayon linux with Openbox by customizing their minimal install .. but I guess nothing really does it like Debian .. older non-bleeding edge software maybe but the dang thing just works with all that you want without any restrictions .. One man's meat is another man's poison I gather ... or I am just too lazy ..
On the other hand is there a possibility of BunsenLabs coming out with a minimal install disk with X to allow us and a base openbox system to allow the user to install what they like example would be slim instead of lightdm .. just an idea ..
Thank you again everyone for all the help and guidance ..

You can already do that with the Debian netinstall: install the base system, then install what you need. I can't see how it is possible for BL to produce something like that though, since every user's preferences would be different.
