My old laptop died a week ago, my new laptop is only a few days away
Meanwhile, here is my latest experiment, a light gtk2/3 openbox theme.
A modified version of color ui and flatts themes.

if you look at the gtk3 CSS for TempuraFlat or one of the bunsen themes you will understand: they're huge, compared to gtk2...
and since i removed all gradients (only that took an hour or so), some elements have become indistiguishable from their backgrounds.
maybe hhh can say something about this?

found it! it's called gtkparasite. now to compile it for bunsenlabs...

gtkparasite works, and it's a nice tool, but it is geared towards app development, not theme debugging.

@hhh, how did you do it? how do you develop/troubleshoot/debug a gtk2/3 theme?

^ GtkParasite was merged into Gtk+ 3 and is now called GtkInspector. So if you're debugging Gtk+ 3 themes, you don't need GtkParasite

@hhh was sad that the Paper icon theme was now grey, but it is quite easy to change it back to the original sandy-brown folder colours again

Oh gawd, it's flipping awful. Even after, what, four years of doing it? Every new theme I have to open the files in leafpad and Ctrl-F "button", for example, and go through every result and change five of them before I find it and that still doesn't get the dialog buttons and gtk3 just sucks.

I am still thrilled that you can change a few hex-codes at the top of any of the Bunsen gtkrc and gtk-main.css files, done. Best work I've ever done next to building the Bunsen ISOs and playing the opening of Ravens Stadium as 3rd chair violist (substitute, 2 years and then they held auditions and hired someone else), Baltimore Symphony.

Stevie Wonder was the front-man. This is an awesome story. Sound check, the orchestra is assembled behind an electric-blue grand piano and Stevie's assistant walks him up to it, all the people are talking and warming up and whatever. My eyes are riveted to a fairly-overweight-blind-as-hell gaaddamn legend, 15 feet away from me. She sits him down, he pulls the bench up. He hits 3 Cs, mid high low, to find out where he is on the keyboard.

John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" is generally regarded as the hardest jazz standard out there, it's a chord change every measure and most measures are 2 changes or more. It's fast. I don't know how many beats-per-minute, you can do the math...

The other 80 or so musicians were oblivious to the fact that they were sharing the stage with the best musician on the planet.

I played with Stevie Wonder and didn't get a picture. #firstworldproblems

-edit- Just thinking about that, he hadn't played a bloody note yet, and his "warm up" at that moment was 3 runs of Giant Steps at way over 144bpm. And he's blind.

The football palace was illuminated with banks of multicolored lights, spotlight beams and lasers, and during the musical performances, large aluminum Ravens with red laser-light eyes and green smoke pouring from their talons were lowered from the stadium.

lol, I completely missed that. I also didn't know that I almost worked with Arethra.

And then we did West Side? Gaad, I don't remember that. What, Maria? Sharks v Jets (snap snap snap)? That must have been a letdown, good call on that a-hole Wagner (with fireworks) after that. Napalm smells like Victory.

but yeah, it's not the first time i heard that gtk theme design is harder and more mysterious than coltrane.

Hi, in your github page you mention the "mist engine for giving nice check boxes". Is that only for gtk2?

According to a QnA from 2011, there were only three gtk3 engines: Adwaita, Unico, and Solidity: http://askubuntu.com/questions/57510/wh … -available

Now that the next version of Firefox (v45) will use gtk3 as default when possible, I've got to get to grips with gtk3 hence my question.

I'll start a new thread about Firefox and gtk3 in a while.

i think the gtk3 part of the theme does not use any particular engine; at least the word "engine" is not found in any of the config files.

Paper icon theme?
Get the icons from github: snwh/paper-icon-theme
(zipfile direct download link)

You can change them to any colour you want using the How To.

There is also the main menu link: Menu -> Help -> Theme Resources

if you mean grayscale only, there's tons!
if you literally mean only three colors (black, white, gray), no, i've never seen that.
you could always desaturate an existing theme, but that will give you many shades of gray...
have you checked out damo's simple script yet?

have you looked through gnome-look?

are you aware of ACYL?

i have already seen this thread.
unfortunately, my gtk3 skills are close to nil.
working on TempuraFlat, i created the gtk2 them first, then i was struggling to get that over to gtk3.
but my theme is still based on bunsen blackish, and in there the gtk3 has some extra buttons (radio and check). check those out. i guess simply editing those files (without touching the theme otherwise) should work.

If you can't get it to work, post back. It requires one of the libglade packages I think.
