Re: non-pae version

We're going to release a CD-sized ISO, the 32 bit version will use the 586 kernel and bl-welcome will offer to install 686-pae if your system can use it.

Our "alpha1" 32 bit ISO included the non-pae 586 kernel, but I don't know if @twoion archived it/still has it available.

No chance! BL ships with Iceweasel as default.

Look in `Menu -> Network -> WWW Browsers` for Install options which have already been configured. You can add your own if you like (edit ~/.config/openbox/pipemenus.rc).

Re: non-pae version

Anything pentium3 & up is guaranteed to work PAE came in with PII, which isn't to say it'll run as well as with a non pae kernel, there's some processor overhead, and in handling the highmem stuff that the non pae kernel avoids for those of us with 1gig of RAM and less..  but you should be fine 0-day

@0-day, the "Release" ISO will include 586 (non-PAE)...

No, there's no date on when either of these will come out, sorry.

Re: non-pae version

I just want to add that there is less difference between PAE and Non-PAE than it used to be. Because the 486 kernel is now just a dummy transitional package, and the 586 kernels uses just slightly less resources than a normal 686-PAE kernel..

When I test 586 vs 686-PAE on my ancient Toshiba, at least 16 years old, there is very little difference in performance. The stats shows slightly less RAM use, but it's neglible...

Anyway, that old Toshiba is still faster and more responsive with linux than most new pc's are with Windows smile If something is a limitation, then it's the graphics. Nothing else.

Ooops, Dove is taken down, and the news page aren't there at this point. I'm setting up a new webpage, so it's only the homepage itself, and the download section that are live and kicking smile

So visit the home-page directly:  http://tweaklinux.org

Dove may come up again at a later stage. But it is replaced by Colors-light-non-PAE that fits on a cd. I found it a bit stupid to have two different releases. It's twice the work smile

But I'll have a look at Dove and see if I'll fix the issues it had, and upload a new version. Because it was a lighter build in general, not only the non-pae bit. But had lighter apps. So I have to think about if I want a special version for ancient pc's...

@spacex Dove was better, dark as crunchbang . It was only the b43 - fwcutter driver and it was perfect . replace iceweasel with pale moon...dark background and minimal.
thanks!

Is there any news? I would say two weeks. This is a reasonable request but it's a bit of a pain in the ass. I have to go through the package list for alpha1 and Meld it with the list for RC2, and then I have to build it and upload the resulting ISO somewhere so @twoion can build a torrent and upload it to our server.

The result will be an updated alpha1, which had a lot of broken Openbox menu entries due to missing applications and application substitutions. To fix that, we would need to offer another verion of our Openbox menu and pipemenus, but for now that would have to be up to the user to fix/customize/configure. Still, I think in 2 weeks we could offer an "RC1" version of a CD-sized Live ISO. No promises, but keep bugging me if you don't see an ISO by April. Until then, kitty in towels with cucumber slices, baby.

Re: non-pae version

Thank you very much for the estimate on the time-frame. Your work is very much appreciated.

I do not understand, though, why having a non-pae kernel makes a lot of trouble. Would it not be possible to just add RC2 to an 8.3 Jessie i386 live CD? Or maybe is it that you want to keep the size below 650 MB AND have a non-pae kernel at the same time? (I personally do not mind if it is more than 1 CD sized, because I am going to put it onto a USB-stick, anyway, but will use it for machines having <4GB memory).

Re: non-pae version

You can already install a jessie Live 586 kernel ISO and add the bunsenlabs repository(s). Then...

sudo apt install bunsen-*

You'll have to reconfigure alternatives to recognize the session, the thread on it is here...
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1236

Reading that, the results weren't great and I could do a ton better using RC2 or Official Release (coming soon) as a base. But yes, the challenge is getting the ISO small enough but still as functional as possible.

Re: non-pae version

Thank you for the explanation, I think I am getting to understand the problems.

So if it is problematic to have a cd-sized iso, and the debian installer+bunsen repository install is not satisfactory, would it be possible to create a live non-cd sized non-pae kernel version of RC2? That is, to have the same as the i386 image you have now, except for the kernel? Or would it take too long, bacause you would also need to change/tweak some other things, as well?

Appreciate the effort, and will wait for the non-pae version as long as it takes. It is my mother-in-law's machine, a bit slow already as it is, but completely functional, and want to make the most out of it with bunsenlabs.

Edit: just checked that debian 8.4 will come out on 2nd April. Are you planning to release bunsenlabs final shortly after that?

There is no 486 kernel in Debian stable, so 586...
