Side note and off topic but have you tried GIMP 3.0 in Trixie?

GIMP 3.0.4 here. No problems but not advanced use.

Ditto - seems OK for the simple things I do with it.

I just tried Gimp 3 on Wayland and hit serious issues editing text layers, so switched quickly back to X11, where everything seems OK.
@Sector11 are you on Wayland with GIMP 3.0 in Trixie?

EDIT: it's not Wayland, I just got the same issue on X11 - all the text layers in my project were suddenly rasterized! Not cool. sad

Re: GIMP 3.0.4 - X11 xwayland wayland

@johnraff and @Sector11, this needs its own thread. GIMP is not a vector program (use Inkscape for vector editing). I'm no expert by any means but I think if you edit text in GIMP using the text tools your fine. If you apply any other changes the text layer will get rasterized (copy the text layer first, I'd guess).

It's hard to diagnose without knowing if your creating something from scratch or importing something and editing it, and what changes your trying to make.

I KNEW (gut feeling, could not put a finger on it directly) that GIMP had changed.

That's NOT good or nice of GIMP to do!

I'm on Beardog (Debian Trixie) with X11 and some wayland lib files.

Wayland - 1308 files listed of which the 6 are installed

 2026·10·17 @ 14:54:46 ~
   $ ser wayland
i A libqt6waylandclient6 - Qt 6 Wayland Client
i A libva-wayland2 - Video Acceleration (VA) A
i A libwayland-client0 - wayland compositor in
i A libwayland-cursor0 - wayland compositor in
i A libwayland-egl1 - wayland compositor infra
i A libwayland-server0 - wayland compositor in

NO xwayland

sert
   $ sho xwayland
alias = aptitude show filename
Package: xwayland
Version: 2:24.1.6-1
State: not installed

Just Xorg - X11

   $ sho xorg
alias = aptitude show filename
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.7+24+deb13u1
State: installed

Re: GIMP 3.0.4 - X11 xwayland wayland

There do indeed seem to be issues with gimp rasterizing text layers without warning.
@hhh found this redit topic: https://www.reddit.com/r/GIMP/comments/ … e_after_i/
And the release notes for gimp 3.2 say:

gimp 3.2 wrote:

Over the years, there have been a number of reports about people losing the ability to edit their text because they accidentally painted over it and turned it into a raster layer.

https://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-3.2.html

So it's not something that started with gimp 3. Anyway, I don't know what triggered it in my case, but yesterday when I opened a gimp project I found that all my text layers had been rasterized. I was not excessively pleased because a text layer can be edited at any time to change the font, text colour, character spacing, whatever, after the fact - very useful, and a rasterized layer cannot be reverted to text once the app has been closed and history is gone. I grabbed an old .xcf file and tried to trigger the rasterization but haven't yet been able to find out what might have caused it (all the text layers!).

But the good news is that gimp 3.2 seems to have fixed this by making rasterization something you have to explicitly switch on. That should prevent these unhappy accidents in the future.

Moved this topic from "BL & General Linux Discussion" to "GUI & Applications".
Hope that makes sense? It can easily be moved back...

Re: GIMP 3.0.4 - X11 xwayland wayland

gimp 3.2.6 is in Testing, but there are some issues that might make it get dropped (hopefully temporarily).
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/gimp
I don't suppose anyone will be working on backporting 3.2.6 to Trixie till they are fixed, but Gimp do provide an appimage:
https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
I might have a go at installing that, because it's had a lot of improvements since 3.0:
https://www.gimp.org/news/2026/09/10/gi … -released/
https://www.gimp.org/news/2026/04/19/gi … -released/
https://www.gimp.org/news/2026/03/28/gi … -released/

Two similar guides to installing Gimp on Debian describing all the different ways, one newer but the older one has more options:
https://linuxcapable.com/how-to-install … ian-linux/
https://gimp.cc/faq/install-gimp-linux.html
On BL forums, @dbvolvox posted about an appimage launcher:
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=9688

And if you want to build the whole thing yourself from source, necessary libraries and all, here's a detailed guide:
https://aaabscom.github.io/a3bs-public/ … p/install/

I think I've found what caused it. I wanted to save a jpg of the image at a reduced size. I hit Image > Scale Image and as soon as the image was resized all the text layers were rasterized. Luckily, you can export the jpg, then undo the Scale Image and the text layers get their text-nature back. smile I guess I must have saved the xcf while it was still scaled, and lost the textiness. Something to remember.

Accidental, it happens. The "Subscribe/Unsubscribe to this topic" link is at bottom-left, right next to "Index", it's easy to click it by mistake without realizing.

Right now it should say "You are currently subscribed to this topic." Click the 'Unsubscribe' link.

If you're creating or editing a post it's not an issue, the link turns into a checkbox.
