Re: BunsenLabs film thread

The Black Dahlia film is indeed very boring, and I am also not a fan of gore, with the exception of some good comedy, which I classify Hellbound as. A way, way less gruesome example of comedy would be Tremors. Much more gruesome examples of satirical comedy would be Verhoven's Robocop and Total Recall. Middle ground is Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

And now for something completely different...

I enjoyed Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr. recently, which my local cinema was showing, accompanied by a real human piano player. It's also available on YouTube.

Keaton broke his neck doing the water tower stunt for that film - https://firstcuriosity.com/entertainmen … -jr-stunt/

^ The house falling on him with the window lined up just right should have killed him.

Can recommend Harold Lloyd as a soul mate to that insanity. Blew part of his hand off in one scene, had to hide it with a prosthetic glove for the rest of his career...

Safety Last! (1923)

Which is echoed in Blade Runner, where Deckard climbs the exterior of The Bradbury. The difference between plagiarism and genius is hiding your sources. Or, as Pablo Picasso said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal."

Or something to that effect...

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

I went to see the Odyssey at the cinema, the first time I've been in a nearly-full cinema for a long time. It's not the film of the century or anything, but I enjoyed every minute. Agamemnon's battle outfit is the perfect mix of awesome and very silly.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

Been binging a bit lately, catching up with the stuff I’ve missed over the last half decade or so. Watched both the Sisu films (very good), The Covenant (decent), Primitive War (fun b-movie), They Cloned Tyrone (good), Dust Bunny (meh), The Gray Man (does this Gosling chap even have facial muscles?) and the last two Mission Impossible chapters (not enough Benji). Yeah, basically the easy to digest kind. I’m too old for the deep stuff these days.

Anne Hathaway: laughs without forehead crinkling
Emily Blunt: sighs with no facial movement

Maybe it's a generational thing?

Nicole Kidman: grins eerily, almost maniacly, then laughs without moving her face Hahahaha, no!

Made it about twenty minutes into the very successful "Project Hail Mary" and noped out. No facial movement was the least of my problems with it. No cute droids was a bigger one.

I didn't make it even close to the introduction of this guy...

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

I just put on "Grand Prix" (1966, dir. John Frankenheimer) for the first time. It's the gold standard of F1 racing films, and has a score by Maurice Jarre. I haven't scene any cinematography yet, there's an extended Overture at the beginning with a very 60's, very episodic orchestral soundtrack.

-edit- Update: The cinematography and sound design are both superb, of course.

I enjoyed Project Hail Mary, but I thought it was very similar to, and not as good as Spaceman which starred Adam Sandler.

^ 50% positive reviews, I'll have to check it out!

Confession: I've never seen any version of the original 1954 film, Godzilla/ゴジラ.

Currently watching Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II in Japanese with subtitles (1993).

"Super Mechagodzilla... READY TO GO!!!"

Gojira responds...

Yes, I am ignoring the baby Godzilla in the room.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965, English version). My favorite Godzilla film, the most sci-fi one, the only one where the English dub is acceptable, and the best of all of the musical Gojira scores by Akira Ifukube IMO. Mothra (1961) is my Number 2 score.

The whole soundtrack to this film is great.

Stupidest movie you loved every minute of? Wanted (2008)

"We call this The Loom of Fate!"

"The loom provides..." And The Dude abides. You got a good sarsaparilla?

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

I personally enjoyed "Project Hail Mary" a lot more than I thought I would.  Rocky rox - fist my bump.
Saw "Backrooms" in the theater as well - oddly surreal, I felt there was an AI inference that was danced around as an underlying premise.  But interestingly unsettling, regardless.
"The Odyssey" was the most recent, and it was enjoyable in an overall sense - a bit long (nearly 3hrs), but I think it kinda had to be, based on the content.  While I'm certainly no expert on the subject, I somehow got the feeling it glossed over certain areas and stayed a bit long on distracting story lines.  Still, an enjoyable movie.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

Top 5 Free Movies for the rest of August (in the US, results will vary by country)

The Omega Man (1971): Charleton Heston brings an A-cast star to a B-Cast performance in a B Horror film. The first half hour is fantastic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3b6CAOUy9Y

Blade Runner (Final Cut, 1982): Arguably the best film ever made.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C23mDLmkYI

Thelma & Louise (1991): Ridley Scott again, I need to watch this, it's been years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlMeMaMLKYI

Black Rain (Dir. Ridley Scott, 1988): Starring Michael Douglas, great. Ridley's most underrated film, the direction, cinematography, story and acting are all amazing.

https://pluto.tv/us/movies/5902318b8bf7fa972b6dc026/

To Live and Die in LA (1985, dir William Friedkin): Soundtrack by Wang Chung, how can you go wrong?

https://pluto.tv/us/movies/67db1706917edb24221b8697/

Honorable mention - Murder On The Orient Express (1974, dir. Syndey Lumet): The best Poirot and one of the best mystery films, Albert Finney should have won an Oscar. He lost to Art Varney with Haryy and Tonto. Also nominated, Jack Nicholson (Chinatown), Al Pacino (Godfather II) and Dustin Hoffman (Lenny).

https://pluto.tv/us/movies/5bd3338367f34cef7af4490e/

These Pluto links are fairly crap, the ad breaks are frequent and long. However, the resolution is good and the films are complete. Definitely worth suffering for Murder on The Orient Express.
