Re: What Are You Listening To? MetalHead Edition

Wait, I'm in the wrong thread. Johnny Cash was a stretch, Hendrix and VH1, fine. But Nightfly in the Metal Edition thread? Mea culpa.

An interesting task for a music student would be to find a precursor. I bet there is one.

Sort of like Painkiller era Priest but heavier and faster and more aggressive vocals.

Way back in the day 1957 or 58 my theory teacher said Debussey used that seventh ninth sequence but that was on piano and it was for a dirge or something like that. Don't know if that's right or not. She was a Greek concert pianist at the time and I was lucky to be a poor student. I only remember because I liked Debussey and my grandmother could play him well and helped me. Now all I can play is the radio or TV. Quit all instruments in the 90s. Terrible arthritis and lost hand reflex memory.

Yep I just looked it up. It was Debussey.

Not quite as impressive as the DEI remaster as I can't tell any difference between the original and this but it's Meshuggah so of course it is perfect.

Thanks! I really like Debussy's music too. cool

At the end of the day, music is music. Everyone says it's mathematics, but it's true.

You can find that chord in Jazz, Brazilian music too. Jorge Ben:

I do think that some classic stuff was the heavy metal of it's day.  No complaints from me including it in the discussion, especially with its influence on modern Metal.

Difficult comparison, but I'd rather say it was pop music. Some of the composers like Paganini or Liszt were absolute masters of their instruments and made a big show (and a shipload of cash) of it.

But since the competition over a small audience was so harsh in these days, only the very best made it to the top, so the distinction between "serious" and "pop" music just doesn't apply to this era imo. It's all the same.

Kinda funny though to think about what music those composers would make nowadays. If Liszt picked up an electric guitar 50 years ago, it would probably sound like Steve Vai or Malmsteen, perhaps even Zappa.

Some of Beethovens piano sonatas can be easily transformed into slow and heavy sludge / doom metal songs, like the stuff from Crowbar...
