Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

I went to Costco to buy some glucosamine for joint pain. The product selection is bewildering. So, I searched Google for "what is better msm or chondroitin" and an article on WebMD addresses the question. However, the overall article states that research has shown no real improvement in joint health or reduction in joint pain from taking any of these. So, I'm more bewildered than ever, and I didn't buy anything.

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

I tried a glucosamine, chondroitin combo for a few months with no difference. I wanted it to work so if there was any placebo effect, I missed it.  It's expensive, so I gave it up. YMMV.

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

@ratcheer -- the best thing for joint problems is exercise, the muscles around the joint are what hold it together.

I attended Medical School in Liverpool University and when I was doing my orthopaedics attachment, the local ex-professional footballers were regular visitors to the outpatients clinic as their knees would simply collapse once they stopped playing (and exercising) full-time and their thigh & calf muscles lost power and tone.

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

^HOAS: Their mistake was starting to exercise full time in the first place. tongue That way they wouldn't have lost their power and muscle tone. All sudden changes are bad for your health.

^ lol

This is very true, the real reason their knees collapse is because they wore them out by running too much.

Let that be a lesson to us all.

RIGHT!  "When I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until it goes away."   ]:D

We had to run in the mob - a 1.5 mile test every year, in X amount of time. X determined by age.
I always pasted and it was the only time I ran that year - I did ride bicycles though so what can I say.

They say that, WD-40 works. I used to use WD-40 for running (when I was much younger)

I have arthritis - on both elbows and my knees.  Now - I take pain meds for that.

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

^ Actually, I was joking...I'd never squirt WD-40 on my joints, but I use the stuff for lubricating mechanical parts. From my martial arts training, I still use linaments like dit dat jow for stiff joints and Tiger Balm for sore muscles. They help relieve stiffness and soreness without taking swallowing pills and worrying about side effects. On the other hand, a hot bath, a visit to the sauna, or even a swim also helps.  smile

Actually WD-40 is said to work. Plus side is, it's only fish oil. If you can stand the smell, it works.

WD-40 also works to relieve fire ant stings.

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

I always keep a can of WD-40 in my cars and my basement workshop, as well as a roll of duct tape. BTW, if you ever have trouble starting your car after a soaking rain, spray your wire set with WD-40 and wait a minute or so before turning the key.  smile
