Re: Debian look likely to drop the i386 installer

I'm not sure using that mini.iso to install 32 bit is going to fly, as of trying today they seem to have nobbled it.
Install fails at installing the base system, it can't fined a script for trixie in /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts/

Today I got round that by switching to a console  cd to that directory & copying the script named testing to one named trixie after which it all ran through.

Not sure that's a good answer though, or that it'll remain a viable work around.

I do now have a working bunsen-base carbon 32 bit on real hardware though, a late-ish P4.

Had to additionally install xserver-xorg-video-intel because X wasn't starting without, ancient integrated graphics too old for the built-in modesetting driver.

Re: Debian look likely to drop the i386 installer

Thought it was too good to be true. Debian devs have already warned they don't plan to provide 32bit installers from Trixie on. Still, who knows, it might be a temporary glitch?

If the basic necessary parts remain on the server we could even think of downloading a mini.iso, taking it apart and reassembling as a BL netinstall iso??

What would have to continue to be available is 32bit kernels. That's not guaranteed by any means.

Re: Debian look likely to drop the i386 installer

It might be temporary, be nice if it was, currently that little dodge I pulled simply copying a script to the expected name worked.

There's the rub of course, will the needed bits remain there? It could be just a glitch, I hope, only I have a suspicion since that was post "download installer components" It might be a deliberate move upstream.

Branding aside, & possibly embedding some non-free firmware for network interfaces to give broader useability, turning it into a netinstall  iso is as simple as embedding a preseed.cfg, when I dig that out of backups & update it somewhat I have a functional one, a bit hacky but gets the job done mostly late_command in-target, or got the job done for beryllium-dev if memory serves. I'll have to see if I can extract it & chuck httpd up internal to my LAN to get it working & tested again, on my to-do list, but real life keeps handing me cabbages (Old UK children's TV reference).

What would have to continue to be available is 32bit kernels. That's not guaranteed by any means.

Indeed, the idea of trying to maintain those & compile a 32 bit version every update doesn't sound appealing.
I found compiling just a one-off quite a chore.

EDIT TO UPDATE:
It's not just 32 bit, installing amd64 Trixie is broken the same way today, at least using the netinst iso.

That could be good news - unless they plan to drop the mini isos altogether.

Eamon Andrews, "double or drop", but the programme name escapes me (compulsory cheers every time it's mentioned)...  no, I've got it - Crackerjack.

Out of the question IMO. Even if a volunteer stepped up, what about security?

Re: Debian look likely to drop the i386 installer

Looks very related, in fact it's the exact issue even if I worked around it differently.
I did go looking for bugreports, but not very hard, was setting up a replacement (inherited Windows 8 era) laptop for Mother to use downstairs since the previous one died, pretty much vanilla Debian Lxqt (bookworm) & having an absolute bear doing so & getting it all to work.  Broadcom wifi & bluetooth are not Linux friendly.

Re: Debian look likely to drop the i386 installer

Got Asus EePC from 2008 with Boron but yeah, It is so old by now that it doesn't really matter. 32bit has been supported so well and i am grateful for that. That machine is starting to be so aged it is soon only worth using something like Puppy on it.
