Well, I think I've said this before: my updates are done after 3-4 weeks at the latest (due to vacations) and there the download is at most ~ 7-800 MB. Otherwise weekly. Because of the risk of breakage.

Fair point. Maybe I was lucky this time because it all seems to be working fine.

[Edit; the login screen keeps freezing when I use the newest kernel, so you're probably right although the problem is easily fixed; I just use an earlier one instead. It's a problem I've had before, when I used Neptune (a Debian distro with KDE).]

First, refresh the system. Don't log in via the login screen, but press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in as root. Then run apt update && apt dist-upgrade. Watch out for any updates that affect the login manager.

When it is done: systemctl reboot and try again to log in as user via the login manager.

Hello Martin, only Fedora forum can tell you something by pasting errors/virtualbox/xorg/wayland logs, i did upgrade from a fixed workstation. I'm lucky as i am a complete beginner in fedora. luckily I had no issues during upgrades.

Unfortunately I have not advanced to this OS, I'm not fast as i have been on my early Debian time. Sorry mate, only an orientation i can tell you pay a visit to the fedora forum.

Currently testing Exton's spin of MX-21, as a live disk. It has LXQT as its window manager and looks pretty good, except that as usual for an Exton release you have to install your own office suite, which I think is odd for a distro / spin with a 2.8 GB download size;

Is LXQT using mutter for Window Manager?
They used to run on openbox, but think I read somewhere that they changed the default to mutter.

I had a quick google for this, and it doesn't appear that it uses mutter as standard although it seems it can be made to use it;

I find I'm getting freeze-ups when I try this;

Just reinstalled and updated Sparky 6, which seems to be working well. One thing that puzzled me though was that when I came to update the system, it updated Pale Moon GTK3 with the GTK2 version, which strikes me as a retrograde step and not very appropriate when you consider that Sparky is based on Debian Testing; maybe this is a foible of Debian Testing's though rather than Sparky's.

Still, it's good to see that they're still around when so many other venerable distros have fallen by the wayside (I believe they're based in Poland);

A new version of Sparky, 2022.07, has just been released. There's some interesting new software featured on the Sparky site, like NotepadNext;

[EDIT: XFce has developed a couple of weird faults where the windows stay glued to the top and won't move, and menus disappear after about 1/10 of a second; so, I've done what I usually do when similar things happen and installed LXQT. It's not perfect and doesn't do everything I want, but it is at least reliable and it all works.]

A similar thing happened in Mint, when Cinnamon froze up twice, at a time when I would have much preferred that it hadn't done. Again the remedy was to install LXQT, and it's working fine again now (I also have XMonad and Spectrwm installed in Mint).

Maybe BTRFS as default filesystem coming at some point? I've tested Garuda Linux (which is Arch based but uses BTRFS as default and using snapper for taking snapshots) and it's pretty neat, so seeing this work on Debian would be good!

Two fresh installation attempts to report, one of which went well and the other less so. The "successful" one was of Salix 15.0 rc, which I'm posting from now and works well although I don't think the default desktop looks as good as that of Salix 14.2 did.

The "unsuccessful" one unfortunately was of Sparky 6.4. The first time I tried to install it the installation collapsed close to the end, and the second time it didn't even finish loading from the live disk.

Your mileage may vary of course, but on my acquaintance with this one I'd recommend the Sparky 5 series (based on Debian buster) instead, for owners of older computers like mine.

I've just installed the latest version of Neptune, 7.5, which for those who don't know is a Debian 11-based distro which uses KDE Plasma as its main desktop manager although there's also a low memory version available from the install screen which uses Enlightenment instead (and which I use).

It's working very well except that the login screen *locks up if I try to boot it up into anything other than Enlightenment, though fortunately Enlightenment's menus allow for other window managers to be selected once you're in it (I'm in Blackbox at the moment).

*As usual, your mileage may vary; I'm not saying that everyone else's login screen will freeze up too, just that it's a possibility.

I am thinking of installing knoppix to my Laptop. I currently have MX Linux as I tried to upgrade Debian 10 and somehow it broke the kernel (amazingly it wasn't anything I did).

Does anyone else here use Knoppix?

I run Knoppix occasionally, but only live session.

I have only ever used Knoppix as a live system, took their advice not to install it.
Since switching my main system to MX Linux I have not even used Knoppix as a live system but use MX for that as well, their persistence system is great.
