I was speaking from the point of view that if you install a debian based distro you have all this stuff installed and if you uninstall something it still leaves packages behind that were recommends.
sudo apt autoremove
would not that clean also recomended packages?
// Regards rbh

No not always - some files get "hijacked"
one of the reasons I use:
sudo apt install --no-install-recommends
I do not have "ghostwriter" on my system but:
aptitude show ghostwriter
will show me: depends, recommends and suggested packages.
After removing ghostwriter I can always do a
aptitude why filename
if I think there are leftovers seen in:
aptitude show ghostwriter
Lots of work!

I guess I take a slightly more passive approach. I'm not worried about a few packages getting left out if I remove something with autoremove --purge, but I will take a look at outputs for both install and install --no-install-recommends when I'm adding a major package and make a decision. I can always remove and reinstall if I change my mind. But, I run stable, your way sounds better running testing or sid.
Maybe every few months when I'm bored I run dpkg -l and scroll through the list to see what I have. Occasionally I remove something. Also, the package list running apt upgrade sometimes looks odd (not something I remember installing or using), and I'll investigate it and sometimes remove a package or two.

@Sector11 thanks, that "hijacking of recommends" explanation makes sense.
@hhh that's usually what I do too. ( I caught a suspicious geolocation daemon the other day that had crept in with some Gnome utility I was testing. )

@ John - I thought you would have known about that since the #! days, that's where I learned about it. It was the reason these came about if anyone cares to have them:

I always wondered why it wasn't 'upgradeable', I guess the developers were Brits...

False alarm, the guns have been locked up. It was tzdata. I'm 'upgradeing' it now. Yay, English!

OK... thanks. I love the convenience of imgur uploads in BL though.

I have a WIP scrot.cloud version of that imgur upload script (and an ImgBB one as well), which I stopped working on after completing the BL script. It is a bit simpler, but requires an existing account. If there is any interest I could try finishing it...
EDIT: I remember why I stopped working on it! There doesn't seem to be an API available for authorizing and uploading via code I can open the relevant user account page, but from there uploading probably needs to be done manually.

I've travelled from north to south on the North Island, but never been to the South Island, which is kind of back to front for a tourist in NZ! Just the way it worked out. Hopefully I can get back to Australia soon and then be part of the NZ/Aust travel bubble.

Ah yes, the mythical Aus - NZ travel bubble. Our PM is extremely reluctant to approve anything like this. I hope she does soon.
