Re: BunsenLabs quotes

Added, pushed.

Please keep'em coming!

I just added some rules to the README:

Rules for adding new quotes
  • must come from BL or crunchbang forum (we'd love some more #! forum items!)

  • must work out of context

  • must be original, meaning it must not be another person's re-quote.

  • must be family friendly or safe for work or whatever that's usually called - but since BL forum is family friendly anyhow that goes without saying. And don't take this too strictly wink

  • don't abuse this to glorify yourself or push some agenda; think of the BL users actually reading this when they log into their system. If in doubt it often helps to wait 24h, then think again.

It does not have to be a joke, It can be quoteworthy for many reasons. Feel free, we add what you want, not what this repo's maintainer wants!

glittersloth is a "gem".  A little rough around the edges at times BUT he always leaves little gems here and there that have me either lol or ROTFLOL.

Love him, would miss him terribly if he ever packed his saddle bags, slung them over his lowrider, and burned a trail off into the sunset.  yikes

Re: BunsenLabs quotes

I've just installed RC3 again to a real partition and enabled bl-fortunes. This is a fun feature with some great quotes, though some of them are really abstract out of context. I'm seeing quotes that I vaguely remeber, and some of my own that I don't remember at all (shocker, alcohol).

Two thoughts for bl-autostart, sleep time of 120 seconds should be shortened to maybe 12 8, and a "NSFW" note should be added. Example, this quote just popped up, and I'm paraphrasing a bit... "Please post the damn message from the shitty terminal output..."

It's a good quote for sure, but not exactly family-friendly. I'll argue that "dildo/fleshlight" is definitely not family friendly, if it makes it into the quotes.

Here's another... "I always figured quotes from this forum were a daily occurrence, like morning wood." Less obtuse, but definitely sexually lurid.

Ah nostalgia! That was a classic response from @machinebacon on the #! forum to a new member asking for help in sub-polite language. But @mb still helped them!

As for the autostarted fortunes: the package is installed by default, but the line is commented-out, so users would have to edit it anyway, including the sleep time. I'd imagine tastes might vary as to whether right-after-login is better than after-long-enough-that-its-a-surprise. (I've got mine set to kick in after a random interval between 120s and 1hr.)

But by all means let's add a NSFW warning to the comment. Text please?

You mean how to phrase the autostart comment? So,mething like...

## bl-fortune - have the system come up with a little adage
## These quotes are from the #! and BL forums.
## Many of them are from the 'Off Topic' subforums of those sites, so they are likely to be abstract, out-of-context...
## ... and possibly Not Safe For Work, children, or your mental health in general.
## Uncomment the following line to enable this.
(sleep 20; bl-fortune) &

Add that to bl-fortunes as well, @ohnonotagain.

OK that'll go out in the next upgrade of bunsen-configs.
I added (adjust the sleep seconds to taste) to the last line.

I actually remember this one, it was a direct response to a newbie venting & complaining in very strong language that Slim destroyed their music collection.
IIRC they got their music back in the end, the partition just wasn't mounted and indirectly SLIM was indeed responsible for that.

About "family friendly":
fortune itself offers a "offensive" filter with the -a and -o switches, I will look into implementing that.
Maybe give me a list of which words/terms/phrases you consider offensive, either here (maybe as PM) or as an Issue.

I wouldn't worry about it, a general statement in the announcement in the autostart should be enough.

If you want to develop that, though, filter general English swear words. Start with these...

Bearded_Blunder: Maybe I'm a minority, to me a terminal is a terminal, is a terminal... you type shit in, make mistakes and the shit hits the fan.. for all of me you could default to xterm.
glittersloth: Never take vim seriously. Once you do, life get's turned upside down. You'll wonder why yy isn't yanking shit on someone else's text editor, you'll be totally lost when f doesn't show the link shortcuts on a browser without Vimium installed, and when playing an online game and everyone goes gg at the end for "good game", you'll be sitting there asking yourself why all these people want to scroll to the top of the chat console.

OK, I won't.
The whole thing is a bit outside my cultural sensitivities anyhow.
The forum is supposed to be family friendly; that should filter out "bad stuff", and IMO it does that job well enough.
So, until the dev team asks me to impement that list I'm OK.
