I was about to post in another thread (https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=4767) but maybe that one's too outdated to resurrect...
I have no strong preference for any particular terminal emulator as the default for Lithium. I've been looking at qterminal (from LXQt) in one of my Openbox setups and I thought it might be one that folks would want to consider.

We thought about the terminal for Lithium a bit, but every time the discussion is started here it goes on endlessly because everyone has a favourite. Terminator, which CrunchBang, then BunsenLabs, have been using up to now has some nice features and a lot of fans, but it is rather slow to start up. We finally picked lxterminal because it's one of the smallest installs with few dependencies, and is quick. We figured everyone will replace it with their personal favourite anyway, so just chose something that provided the basics.
But I've just installed qterminal and it does look quite nice. Thanks for the tip!

So true.
Yeah, I like lxterminal. I didn't know about qterminal until recently, when I was checking out LXQt. I finally got around to replacing LXDE with LXQt in Arch, and I did a Buster installation with LXQt as well. (Seems like I never really warm up to those two DEs and I end up logging into Openbox most of the time instead with those installations.)

I've pushed for a different default terminal for this release because Lithium is a quick desktop, and terminator is pretty much the slowest terminal to open, and it's slow every time.
Test it yourself via System>Edit Debian Alternatives>xxx-terminal-emulator. I'm using mate-terminal because I like its "Use colors from system theme" option, and it's way faster to open than terminator. It would be a challenge to find a terminal that opens as slowly as terminator.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

@ Johnraff, lxterminal is a good choice, mature and stable.
Ive used qterminal in the past and the feature set is quite good.
Brings in more deps than i would like for a terminal in a gtk setting though.I dont mind qt gui apps but would rather stick to gtk gui apps where possible.

That terminator opens a bit more slowly than others doesn't bother me, because it's quite a nice terminal emulator. Anyway, obviously it's easy enough to install, for those who want it. I just wanted to mention qterminal in case anyone wanted to take a look at it. Seems to be an ok option, but I'm not pushing for it to be the default.

Sorry about that, definitely wasn't my intention to start any trouble here.

No, you didn't start it. I did when I convinced @johnraff and the rest of us boiz to consider another terminal as the default, once again.
I like lxterminal as the default, but we'll have to suffer the slings and arrows when we release our first test ISO.

Trouble? No. Sorry? Definitely not. I don't care, it's kinda funny.
If you're interested, I think Terminator sucks. (ducks and runs)

Terminator might be like Trump in how it divides people into haters and lovers.
But anyway, as far as default terminal emulator for Lithium goes, it's lxterminal.
(gets tf out of here too)

^ Terminator is bloat, just like trump, The opposition is not much better. Either way you look at it, both want endless wars (race, civil, global etc) and indentured servitude for the majority of the the worlds populations.

Lol..the old debate about terminator vs other emulators is just like politics

Good, it's agreed right here and now. Lithium will use lxterminal by default, and the answer to any terminal suggestion or complaint is...
sudo apt install your_precious_terminal
Then... Main Menu>System>Edit Debian Alternatives>xxx-terminal-emulator, and select your precious terminal. Yes, my precious.

Nice how you put it 8o
LXterminal isn't all that bad really and it is quite useful for the vast majority of use cases.

Good you made the move away from Terminator!
If Roxterm was still under development it would be a better choice than lxterminal... (ducks and runs)

Excellent. Lol, I had no idea that there were such strong feelings against Terminator (shrugs).
