Hi, I'm running bunsen-hydrogen 8.9 and would like go to version 9 helium.
Is there an upgrade path or is clean install recommended?
Also not sure what steps I would need to upgrade, wondering if it will be complicated.

A clean install is the best way to get BunsenLabs Helium.
It should be possible to upgrade a Hydrogen/Deuterium system but the user-level configuration would have to be updated manually because the package manager won't touch anything in ${HOME}.
not sure what steps I would need to upgrade
If it was me I would first upgrade the Debian packages by following this guide:
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ … ng.en.html
Once that has been done I would then change /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bunsen.list to the Helium repositories[1] and use `apt update && apt-get dist-upgrade` to bring those versions up to date and finally merge the changes in /usr/share/bunsen/skel with the configuration files in ${HOME}.
So yes, a little bit complicated.

thanks @Head_on_a_Stick for the instructions. I could try the upgrade, as you say it's a little complicated, but I think I will follow your good advice on a "Clean Install". I have good notes on my config so it's not such a big deal for me.
Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks again for quick reply and excellent support.

Thank's you both for bringing up this topic and explaining the two paths to helium.
One thought: if you are considering a clean install anyway, it can't hurt to try the upgrade and learn a little about what breaks and what doesn't.
If it doesn't work so well, .. well the option of a clean install is still sitting there, exactly like in the beginning.

Also having a backup of your home folder is a good thing to have as well.

I have very little user data on my install (everything significant is in Dropbox) so despite having no backup... I tried the approach Head_on_a_Stick suggested. For the record, it seems to have been entirely successful.
I know, right? I wasn't expecting that, either. Obviously, YMMV, but if you have decent backups (and/or you can afford to be plain reckless), it's worth trying.

A little <bump>, if I may?
Some upgrade feedback of a Bl-user
Having replaced a problematic Debian 8.11 by "Hydrogen" yesterday, I was being "reckless" and have upgraded Hydrogen to Helium:
~$ sudo inxi -Fxz
System: Host: conroe Kernel: 3.16.0-7-686-pae i686 (32 bit gcc: 4.9.2)
Desktop: Openbox 3.5.2 Distro: BunsenLabs 9.6 helium
Just as with jjsanderson, the upgrade seems to have gone fine. The GRUB background "wallpaper" is different, as is the Bunsenlabs login screen.
(However, my problem with Bunsenlabs hanging at "Loading, please wait..." is still happening... - https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=5323)
