Installation

Good Morning. I know it's possible to install Bunsenlabs through Debian, but it should be Debian Netinstall. I have Debian Mate installed on my machine. Is it worth installing for existing Debian or installing again from scratch?
Thank you,
Gustavo.

Re: Installation

You don't need to start from scratch. You can add the BL repository to your sources and install our packages to create a BL session.

Wait a little while, someone will walk you through it (I'm not at my computer).

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: Installation

Sources - sources.list and backports details

You should have the BL repo set in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bunsen.list, with the following entry:

deb http://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian bunsen-hydrogen main

Update and upgrade, then install the bunsen packages

sud apt-get install bunsen-meta-all

Set the display manager with

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Reboot and run 'bl-welcome'.

I don't know what configuration you may need to do in $HOME, but for reference the default BL $USER configs are in '/usr/share/bunsen/skel'.

So did it work? Were you able to choose "Openbox" from the login screen's session list and use the BunsenLabs desktop?

Hey Gustabo! You *shouldn't* have too much a problem, I ran bunsenlabs with openbox (the desktop environment) on an old 2004 Sony Vaio with a Intel Centrino processor with like 1 gig of Ram.  You said you were running Mate before, while i'm not familiar with it, I think if you can pull a similar gui, openbox and thus bunsenlabs should do okay with your specs.

Thank you for this.  I had to use this a few hours ago because of something stupid I did.

Re: Installation

I some how ended up with a ful install of Debian 8.8 Jessie from my netinstall after having a lot of issues trying to install BL with media. Can i use this approach to get back to BL and is there a big difference in performance? Have a i3 with 4 gb ram 500gb hd samsung np-rv511. I was able to run the Live BL and loved it!!! Thank you..

Re: Installation

There is a method posted a few posts previously, to install the BL packages. Or do a basic netinstall, and run the BL-netinstall script, as described here: https://www.bunsenlabs.org/installation … all-script

Re: Installation

damo,
i did read that before posting and looked around. it says every were i saw though "minimal" install of Debian from netinstall and when i start the script it sees the desk top and something about might "not" be "operational" if i precede with the install. that is why i am double checking plus am fairly new to Linux. I am Loving the performance increase that was seen on Bunsenlabs Live USB and even what i see on Jessie too.!!! Its like i got a new machine for the cost of the time it took to install wink Need to know it is stable to though for web development since i am taking classes? Thank you- would appreciate and input or suggestions to.

Hard to answer, because it isn't clear, to me at least, what your problems are. What kind of issue have you had with installing from "media"?

Many people use BL as their main OS, and you can't get much more stable than Debian Stable. How suitable it is for your use may depend on the software you need - if it is in the Stable repos then great, otherwise you may need to do some work installing applications safely.

Re: Installation

I'm not sure how successful you'll be installing BL over jessie LXDE. I tried it on my stretch LXDE system and found that the way LXDE sets up it's session is convoluted.

What happens is you get an rc.xml file from Openbox, which is what BL honors, but also an lxde-rc.xml file from lxsession. Plus, LXDE has it's own autostart file.

It's easier to just install and learn either BL or Debian LXDE, IMO. The performance is nearly equal, lxsession is very light.

Re: Installation

^+1 It might be hard to keep BL and LXDE from interfering with each other, especially since they both use openbox.

Can you please elaborate on this?

Note that our earlier images do not support UEFI but our current "Deuterium" ISO images should boot and install in UEFI mode.
