To each his own, I find reducing screen brightness at night does the trick. A light-background GTK theme not only has the advantage of being more usable with some apps, but it's less of a shock when you navigate to a web page with a white background.

@gako: Shades of brown are risky, the desktop might easily turn stuffy like a toilet in a 70's pub. You know how to mix your colours, I'm craving black coffee and dark chocolate.
