Well, this depends on your point of view. I fully agree it probably hasn't to do with the kernel. After the upgrade I had the same issues with the previous kernel. My assumption is that somehow something happened to the Openbox settings. As I could log in as root, it might have to do with either the user settings or it had to do with permissions. Because it happened right after the upgrading, it is very likely it happened during upgrading the kernel I would say.
2. NEVER log into a graphical session as root
At this point I was just trying to figure out what did and what didn't work. As I was fully fine with eventually just re installing the machine, I see no harm in logging in as root. I keep a recent update of stuff I need to keep.
