Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ have to agree with you there, of all the windows incarnations 7 was was the best of them in terms of UI. I would use that exact same classic look at a previous workplace as i disliked the aero themes and was always accustomed to the windows 2000 interface from the late 90's early 2000's, so i was glad they integrated that into 7 when it came along.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Yea, I'll bet there is ...

I went from MS-DOS v6.22 to Win 3.11 for Workgroups(NT)  and ended with Win2k(NT).  From everything I read after that I'm glad Win2k reported "with a blue screen of death" I had no hard drive in my computer - Jul 2007.

I never could figure out just how Win2k could boot off the only HD in the computer then tell me there was no HDD in the computer.  DUH!!!!!!

That got me Ubuntu v6, Ubu v7 would not download at the cybercafe.  And I installed it "on the HDD that didn't exist" no less ... never looked back.

BTW: It still chugs along on a P-III with SliTaz Linux.  IT DOES exist Windows tongue

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ Speaking of time/nostalgia, just realized that, while I still run Ubuntu on desktop VMs or VPS instances, I've not actually installed and run it on bare metal as a primary desktop OS in 10 years. That's kind of shocking. I stopped at version 10.something (Lucid Lynx, iirc). Refused to install its successor out of spite, because I was miffed they didn't adopt my suggestion to call it Masturbating Mosquito (they named it some Moaning Meerkat or whatever). Pretty long grudge I've been holding  lol

Actually I dropped all thoughts of UBU since I heard they installed "Ads".

IMHO they are the linux version of Windows Spyware.

^Ubuntu's top desktop release was Hardy Heron (8.04). Last time I used it must have been 2011, almost nine years back. It was also my last Ubuntu release on bare metal.

@Sect11
That's a tad harsh*. You're talking about the Amazon thing? Can't you easily** remove that via a couple of commands, or just select the minimal option during installation? I used Win10 for a couple of weeks (came pre-installed with a recent laptop purchase) and Ubuntu doesn't hold a candle to Microsoft in the pervert arena.

*My religion (motorcyclism) disallows hating on anything originating from the Isle of Man, so there may be some bias there.

**I'm fairly certain removing all traces of Amazon is far easier than removing all traces of Snaps.

HARSH! ... this from the guy that refuses to use it because they didn't use your name scheme!

Don't know if it can be removed .. don't care - just the fact they put it there!
It leaves the doubt of: "What aren't they telling us?"

OH!  I do not doubt that at all.
MS has a LOT of practice at being "bad to the core"

I saw Win 10 in a store once - that was "close enough"!

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I have gaps in that timeline.
I started in the 90s with 3.1 on a 386, then nothing for a decade, then installing XP on hand-me-down laptops that probably couldn't have managed Vista or 7 anyhow, then on to Linux and never looked back.
The last time I came in close contact with Windows, that was actually 7 on a laptop in my work place; but it had been complaining about some missing credentials for a year already, to the point of hampering usability and just annoying everybody. And everybody is happy with that lappy running MX Linux today!

Are you sure it wasn't because that's when they dropped the almost perfect Gnome2 desktop for the "and now for something completely different" Unity?

Sector11 wrote:

They did for one release only iirc and stopped doing it a long time ago, but they really didn't do themselves any favours there.
To this day I'm hearing people say things like the above, or even "I want to get rid of Win 10 and start using Linux. But I heard that Ubuntu also does telemetry???"
Then explain to them that bug reports or popularity contest could also be defined as telemetry but have nothing to do with that Amazon debacle...

Ubuntu wasn't my first Linux experience. Started using it because, at the time, it simply detected my hardware out of the box better than other distributions. Think I only ran Gnome 2 for a year (give or take) at most, around the G and H versions of Ubuntu and whatever esoteric names Fedora called their releases of the time. I tended to run the Xubuntu variants prior to that (because hardware), and maybe KDE 3.x or Ratpoison with PCLinuxOS or PC-BSD. Never used Unity. Papanominal got me into #! and *box WMs around that time and I completely ignored the whole Unity and early Gnome3/KDE4 guanoshow.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

This Windows talk reminds me of this XKCD episode.

In the late 90s at my highschool we had Windows 3.11, and at home I had Windows 95 that I was breaking and reinstalling every week for a year. I cba to dig screenshots from my backup CD/DVDs, so here's later one from 2001 (or 2000, not sure) that I already had online: Windows 98SE with icon set from WinME or some other icon pack.

First time I've encountered Linux was at uni in 2001, and I was experimenting with a lot of distros for some years at home - usually in dual boot setup. The last dual boot home experiment was in 2007 with stage1 Gentoo, where compiling DE took about 14h. I've had issues with audio driver and in the end I had a hunch that fixed my problem - I've compiled drivers for completely different line of sound cards and it just worked. I just didn't have need to keep Linux on my home machines, while at work I enjoy a lot more operating Linux workstations.

On my old laptop first I've had #! installed and then BL, but I sold it two years ago. Currently if I need ssh I have my phone, so no need for laptops at the moment.

You're a 55 year old classical violinist who has been playing rock and jazz since his teens, which color do you pick?

There was a joke about windows 95 at the time:
- why is it called windows 95?
- because it works 95%!
(some years later)
- why is it called windows 98?
- ...

both win 95 and win 98 didn't come out until late that year. i'm sure they were under enormous pressure to release it at all in the year it was named after.

anyhow, hacking: http://virtualplastic.net/ lots of great tips about win95,98,xp...

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Why not the pink? You could've dyed your hair electric blue to finish off the look.
Out of curiosity, can you pizzicato an acoustic-electric violin when plugged in, or will the circuitry pick up too much distortion?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Dude, pink is not my color. I'm an autumn guy, greens and oranges, not spring.

Yes, you can pizz this axe just fine, you pluck the string over the finger board, not near the bridge. Actually, you shouldn't touch the strings between the fingerboard and the bridge, and don't touch the bow hairs. The oil on your hands doesn't play well with friction. Friction and the micro-barbs (tiny spikes on the hair pluck the string over and over as you draw the bow) of the horsehair or fiberglass artificial-horsehair pull the string via the bow. String players use rosin to help with that, the same way gymnasts and weightlifters use rosin to help their grip. Rosin makes things sticky when heat occurs and also protects the barbs or human skin from being torn off suddenly.

The only thing I'll need, besides a honking loud amp, is an effects processor with noise suppression so the thing doesn't howl feedback every time I stop playing at high volume (because it's not a solid body). The violin was shipped already via FedEx, I think I'll get it Tuesday.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

My idol, Jean-Luc Ponty on a Barcus Berry in the seventies. Blue and pink and pizzicato, glitter-s... Wait, no bronies, right?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX-9_3q6Z_g

Note, he's playing a custom-issued 5-string (the low viola C string is added to the violin's E-A-D-G). You can tell because the left side of the scroll has 3 tuning pegs. Also when he cranks out that bottom open C. That's what I wanted but they don't make it anymore, or maybe they only ever made it for Ponty. They're made in Romania now, I'm hoping for a quality product.

Notice his bowing. At the head, he uses two up-bows in the middle to get to a down-bow for the end of the phrase. Those details really make a difference in string playing. Down-bows sound "weightier". Note: Not heavy/heavier. Weight.
