I pushed this fairly far (still missing some features) and it's getting interesting. It uses w3m-img to display images in supported terminals (urxvt & xterm, does not work with lxterminal), similar to ranger.
Config, perhaps you will need to adjust variables named
FONTH=14 # 14 Size of one terminal row
FONTW=8 # 8 Size of one terminal column
also slideshow time in seconds
slidetime="1"
Usage
zebra --help
zebra *.png
zebra -q some.png # show and quit

Not sure what direction you are wanting to go with this but are you aware of ueberzug as an alternative to w3mimgdisplay. Perhaps it offers you more...

@beaker, I wasn't (or I forgot about it), thanks for sharing. p.s. Direction is basic, fastest possible image viewer, wallpaper setter.
edit, quick Überzug test:
- Überzug is extremly interesting, but for now over my head.
- fzfimg.sh is what i tested briefly and making '[scaler]=contain' in line 110 makes is even better. (It doesn't seem to clean the window on exit, or i'am missing something)
- Images with alpha are not supported (or i don't know how to display them correctly)

I don't know what you guys are discussing, I'm just here for the cute doggo pics.
No, he can't sleep on the floor. What do you think I'm yelling for?!!!
