OOTB:
damo@lithium-dev:~$ cd /tmp
damo@lithium-dev:/tmp$
root@lithium-dev:/etc/apt/sources.list.d#
I think readability would be improved by adding some spacing in the line in .bashrc:
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w \$ '
^here
This gives:
lithium-dev:~ # cd /tmp
lithium-dev:/tmp #
Personally I always bring in my own .bashrc files, with nice colored prompts - green for $USER and red for root.

^IMHO, this is highly personal ... I prefer this without space; in my mind (the first) space delimits 'unnecessary junk' on the left, and command on the right.

But this is confusing IMO
/tmp$
instead of
/tmp $

^Not to me ... just opposite to you
As i said, it is highly personal. Of course, whatever it will be set as default, it is "vim .bashrc /PS1 + a few other wild keystrokes + ESC :x" away from setting it to one's own preferences.

Have to agree with Imbecil here, at least that people have individual preferences, and without a clear majority wanting change I think we're best sticking with the Debian default settings - ie the way it is now - and leave tweaking to users.
