I've been using Thunderbird for long years - since Windows 98 days - and getting everything just the way you want it can take some time, but once you're there it works pretty well. But I guess the same would be said about Mutt or...

But in this case the script sends your credentials in plaintext, which is vulnerable to a packet sniffer, so it is definitely "unsecure" whether linux or not.

Ah yes, that script itself looks a bit insecure but I doubt if Google (yet) have any idea about what scripts people are proposing to use when they ask to "enable insecure apps". I still think it basically just means anything G don't have control of, rather than some specific encryption settings.

Ah, but that's the beauty of it: Google's arguments always seem to make so much sense!
You are right though: it has nothing to do with Linux.
It has everything to do with Google.

Generally speaking, if you can use SSL to access your mailbox, credentials are NOT sent as clear text, no matter whether you use the command line or thunderbird or the Browser - I think...
