I won't call FF the best browser, just the least worst - it's still spyware, but at least we can neuter it.

it's only too true.
must use ghacksuserjs.

Also big G seems to be better at the public opinion game: it's slippery as an eel, it's hard to say anything bad about it. but if you care to dig, and discard what is considered The Cool Rant On The Net Today, it's actually worse than FF in every privacy/configurability respect.
People just lap up Google's convenient lie about being good because they're (mostly) OpenSource.
When in reality they invented the rape of Open Source.
(And being secure because they have full control about what data leaves your bubble.)

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Sad, as Chrome(ium) is pretty darn fast compared to FF. If adblocking is crippled, then I won't be using Chrome on my phone as it gets real slow with the plethora of ads downloading over my weak data connection. I do hope Mozilla will keep true to form and not play the same game as Google.

What I'd like to know definitively is if Chromium is going to get the same change as Chrome, because if so, I guess I will have to return to FF.

Edit:
True story - there's this payment portal here that won't load of FF (even with user agent switching) no matter what, and only insists on Chrome or IE (gulp). The good thing is that it's a once-a-year payment, so I just drive down and do it the old fashioned way. Everyone seems to do it online (via either chrome or an even worse smartphone app that's themed from the pre-iOS7 days), so the staff tend to look at me like I'm some sort of luddite when I'm there. Maybe I'll yell "fornicatoooorrrs" like some crazy Amish the next time I'm there.

Glitter, you have never, and I mean N E V E R  ceased to get a chuckle or two out of me.

Which is really good when the truth hurts.

Why won't Chromium "get the same change as Chrome"? It will.

Using the Openbox (3.5.2) session of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS but very interested in BL :)

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Looking for some hardware advice. Didn't want to hijack that thread @ohnonot started, and creating a new one would probably be a waste of space.

Been looking for a slim laptop. Tech journos like to call them ultrabooks* or something. Won't be for serious work. Doesn't have to be too big - anything from 11.5" to 13.3" 1080p would be enough. Backlit keyboard required (because I'm disco). Preferably fanless. Found a couple of candidates. The following question pertains to one of them;

Assuming I install a SupersizeMe distro with a MichelinMan DE (which I won't, but let's pretend I would) as a host OS to run a kvm/qemu virtual machine via virt-manager or gnome-boxes with something light installed (like BL or Arch xfce) for FF web browsing and scripting, how adequate would an Intel N4200 - 1.1GHz quad-core (4 cores, 4 threads), 2.5GHz Burst/Turbo - be? Memory would probably be 8GB (1600MHz DDR3) and storage will be solid state (not NVme though). I know I can easily make a bare-metal Debian or Arch install fly on this (I've achieved more with less in the past), but never attempted virtualization tasks.

My experience with these low-power CPUs says that they're decent enough when short bursts of processing power are needed, and only lose out when we require sustained loads (encoding, gaming, compiling, etc), but those experiences were with the bourgeois CoreM line, not everyman Pentiums.

*Ultrabook is such a stupid term. Anything that can't grow to kaiju rivaling height doesn't deserve an 'ultra' in its name!!

I'd be surprised if anyone knew anything more about current hardware than you, sloth, and even more surprised if they knew more about Linux compatibility with that hardware.

Still... Let The Bodies Hit The Floor.

BTW, I posted pictures of my pedal-pusher, I haven't seen what gas-guzzler you're riding.

At least yours will have two wheels and not four, or worse, three. Semi-cheater, at worst.

I should break out some 80's Jane Fonda Workout spandex and produce a series of "Moonwalk Your Weight To Zero Gravity" weight-loss videos.

Actually, before I did a NUC build* for mum a few weeks ago, I knew diddly-jack-squat about recent hardware. Totally out of touch and dangerously confused, like a white supremacist who isn't white. I'm somewhat relieved to learn that you lot aren't doing much better.

*By "build", I really mean opening the lid and attaching memory and storage sticks. Nothing else needed. It's so cramped inside that thing. Fairly certain I'm going to make a horlicks out of it when the time comes to clean the fan or change thermal paste.

Same Yamaha MT-10 (FZ-10 in Yankland) I shared with you a couple of years ago, just with more stone chips and a fickle coolant temp sensor.

More or less cramped than a Sun "lunchbox" case (SPARCstation LX/Classic/IPC/IPX) with a floppy drive in it? The fingers I pinched reassembling one of those back in the day.

Revenge stories need to be like ad-blockers. Kill everything. None of that "acceptable ads" bullshit. Don't go copping out on me by making the bad guys "relatable" all of a sudden. Halfwit writers...
