As I want to change the all colours automatically, I would also like to change the colours of the OB menu. Unfortunately, changing menu.items.bg.color, menu.items.active.bg.color, menu.title.active.bg.color do not seem to have an effect. What do I need to change if I want to change the background color of the openbox menu (both in the highlighted & non-highlighted case)?

Did you use the correct <theme>/openbox-3/themerc file?
Did you deselect/reselect the theme using obconf?

You can also get active theme name as such
xml2 < $HOME/.config/openbox/rc.xml | grep 'theme/name'

what others said.
I have a hotkey to "reconfigure openbox" - you can also use
openbox --reconfigure
this needs to be doen after every theme change.
the theming specs are here.
not all options are available for all contexts.

Thank you all. I found out that in my themerc, menu.items.bg and menu.items.active.bg were not set, so trying to set menu.items.bg.color and menu.items.active.bg.color did not work.

Thanks, I will check them out. Right now, my OB is using the XFCE menu (it did so right after installing openbox on my Fedora XFCE base system), but having some tools to tweak it is very nice
