A minor point but frustrating nonetheless. When I change the cursor theme (Helium x64) where it then applies is not consistent but reverts to the default. New themes do not display on the desktop at all. On Thunar the new theme applies when mousing over a file or folder but not on the main window. It appears on the main body of LibreOffice but reverts to the default over the close button. Any suggestions as to how to apply these globally?

Actually it appears you have to restart xorg (or reboot). Hopefully I'am wrong. edit: restarting lightdm also didn't do a trick.

To set cursor theme for the system...
sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
Choose your theme, logout.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

OK, this is what I did.
Copied my selection of themes into .icons as I do for other distros. They all appear under Preferences - Appearance - Mouse Cursor and are selectable but then act as per my original post.
Using the code provided here only gives an option to choose between the 0,1,2,3 original default cursors and nothing else.
I tried re-copying the themes as root into usr - share - icons but the result was the same.

Well, can you set any of the available themes system-wide via that reconfigure command? What cursor theme are you trying to make your default?
