Several issues with new hardware

Hi everyone!

(Disclaimer: Sorry for bad grammar. English is my 2nd language.)

To keep a long story as short as possible: after many years of using Crunchbang and Bunsenlabs on several old IBM ThinkPads, I finally had the money to buy new tech. But as my days as a poweruser are long since over I need a little help with several issues that have presented itself.

The laptop in question is a Schenker XMG with an IntelCore i7 8750H and a Geforce GTX 1050. I set up Bunsenlabs as a dualboot with Windows.

After 4 sleepless nights, only the following problems remain:

- Powering off does not work; The desktop just freezes
- After every reboot, the wallpaper has reset
- After every reboot, the numpad on the keyboard is deactivated
- Should I use nouveau or the proprietary drivers? Do I need bumblebee?

I have already perused these forums (which is how I could solve the wifi issues...) and others, but most solutions only work for older hardware. Sorry if I overlooked the relevant posts.

So if anyone has any tips or advice or links or funny cat videos, I would be forever grateful!

Wallpaper being reset is an issue that has been discussed. It seems to be a bug but there is no fix to it as such. Currently the package called nitrogen handles the wallpapers, and after every reboot it gets reset. Here's the fix for that. Henceforth be sure to change the background using feh rather than nitrogen. But I still sometimes do it with nitrogen - when I want a wallpaper just for that session. smile

Concerning the numpad, that's how BLOB is. What I have done is install numlockx,

sudo apt install numlockx

and then added the following line to autostart (main_menu>openbox>edit autostart).

## Turns numlock on on boot
numlockx on

You can try it out.

Re: Several issues with new hardware

Unless you need particular capabilities of your graphics card for software, gaming etc, it is usually easier to stick with the default nouveau driver. Configuring nvidia/optimus/bumblebee is potentially a PITA, but you need it for CUDA features.
