Missing Thunar icon w. Paper theme in Buster

There seems to be an issue when using the Paper icon theme with Thunar and Tint2 on Debian Buster. Some people report that the file manager task bar icon reverts to a generic square, not the correct directory icon:

I haven't yet seen an icon theme I like better than Paper. It's ...restful.
But that Thunar icon thing is an Issue that I was going to bring up eventually, if it didn't fix itself, as these things sometimes do.

There's no such problem on Debian Stretch, even with the same Paper build (I think - that's something I should check) so it might be Thunar...

Has anyone else noticed this?

Agreed, I love Paper. But I've given up using it in Buster, I'm bitten by that bug almost every time using xfce4-panel.

Interesting. I just switched to Dolphin and the Paper folder icon opened consistently in my panel 40 times in a row. What in the world is going on here?

Buster + tint2 + openbox + using Paper icons: no problem here with Thunar icon.

Whenever I try other icon themes, I always end up reverting to Paper wink

I'm going to go back and have another look. Strange that hhh and I both see missing Thunar icons, but not Damo.

Re: Missing Thunar icon w. Paper theme in Buster

Le bug avec xfce4-panel. Playing with the panel width might fix it, but it's not a priority for me ATM to troubleshoot it yet. It hasn't occurred with any other icon theme I've used on lithium.

Oops, forgot le scrot...

BTW, a side issue that we could fix in Paper-Bunsen is the missing "zero volume" icon in xfce4-notifyd (see the last scrot)...

Re: Missing Thunar icon w. Paper theme in Buster

Playing with Buster/Lithium today.

Not much news so far, but:

  • The missing Thunar icon applies to the taskbar, not Thunar's internal navigation icons.

  • You can check that it's not a tint2 issue by using Alt+Tab to switch windows - the same default openbox icon is shown for Thunar in that dialogue box. Also see: https://gitlab.com/o9000/tint2/issues/726

  • It's a bit unpredictable - the first time I booted a VirtualBox Lithium it was OK, but the issue came up the next boot.

  • In QEMU OTOH sometimes I can restore the proper Thunar icon by opening a subfolder, then returning where I was. But often this doesn't work.

  • 'strace thunar |& grep 'open.*/usr/share/icons.*No such file' showed nothing useful, nor search for user-home, which looked identical on Stretch & Buster.

Yet to try:
Real hardware to check if it's a virtualization issue.
The same behaviour found on a 32bit laptop - intermittent missing icon.
Other WM than openbox.
See below - no problem with MATE.

EDIT: tried on Buster with MATE + Thunar + Paper Icon Theme (the BL package) - no problem. It looks like some Paper+Openbox thing. Our Paper package is built from the latest git commit (August 15 2018, 8c7bf8d) so nothing to do there.

Re: Missing Thunar icon w. Paper theme in Buster

xprop of a Thunar window on Buster (don't be misled by the hostname helium4-64) with MATE, using the BL paper-icon-theme package, no icon problem (note that unlike with the two openbox sessions, the icon is not drawn out):

john@helium4-64:~$ xprop

Neither of the above two setups shows the missing-icon problem.
