Indeed profit
So here's what I've done for this currently as an example of custom settings in the config:
It's aimed at BL-Moonlight and at first glance the changes are kinda subtle:
What it took:
Noted that obconf says windows are using "Sans" `fc-match Sans` > "Noto Sans"
Set 'Noto Sans Mono' for the tooltip && 'Noto Sans Mono Bold' for the buttons.
Set the font colour matching the grey from the icons, button && tooltip.
Set the button text background to match the borders, that's the darker patch.
Pushed that whole field one character away from the icons (it sat too close).
Added one leading & trailing space to button text, the dark patch looked "wrong"
Decided I like the result
(Even without that the default inherited settings look pretty nice though.)

Thank you @hhh and @Dobbie03 for your comments.
It seems that with Lithium we are going to have some very good themes.
An incredible job @hhh.

I think that's been the case since day dot I totally agree though, the new crop of themes I have seen are very nice.

@Dobbs, looking good!
Thanks for the theming compliments, gents! The strategy has been to gradually refresh the old gtk2-engine-murrine and gnome-colors greyscale theme to a full refresh. Helium introduced Beam, which added color, and Paper icons, which added some flatness.
The new Arc/oomox themes are totally flat, no gradients or rounded progress bars like you see in the Debian installer. As you see in my scrots, I've even dropped drop-shadows in compton and am using inactive-window transparency instead. The helium themes still all work, though, so you can install something like gnome-colors, Faenza and/or Humanity icons and still have the old school look (that Mate still has, IIRC).
Ironic that to move forward in theming we've had to move back to before Windows XP, but I suppose that's the fashion industry. Cyclical, almost everything old gets revived and updated at some point.

Nah, it's the "recently educated" W10 has gone that way too, everything flat, gradients are too hard for the new "programmers"

Lol, no. And in case you weren't being sarcastic, gradients are just not the new esthetic. Android is pretty damn flat, I think Windows is just copying the trend.

*ANDROID* was written entirely by the recently educated
Distingishing "their", "there", and "they're" is thus too difficult, never mind gradients!

I love the fuzzy clock - just out of interest, do you actually use it? I'm not sure I could get into the habit of reading the time like that.

Finally upgraded conky to v1.10 and converted all conkyrc's to the lua syntax format.

This scrot is showing the system info bar that's been running for quite some time - and the kickass fuzzy-clock conky.
