[SOLVED] New SSD, I want my /Home on another drive

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a new SSD and I would like to have my main install on the SSD and my /home partition on a backup internal 2tb HDD.  I have done a full install and at the moment /home is on the SSD.  Can I easily move this to the HDD and have that as my home partition?

Hope that makes sense.

Have you checked the Debian forums?
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=103654

EDIT:  The most important part of that is the change to /etc/fstab; assuming you can mount the internal HDD from your file manager (without using the command line) you can disregard most of the rest of that thread.

No I hadn't.  Checking now though smile If I dont have a dedicated /home partition what should I do?

I should have mentioned I am using Arch and I used Architect to install tonight and everything is in the same / partition.

Should I format my 2tb HDD to /home?

I'm not an Arch user, but assuming it uses /etc/fstab, you should be able to simply mount the HDD, copy everything in your ~/[username] to [drive]/[username], make the change to /etc/fstab as described in the Debian thread, and reboot; your new /home partition should be picked up automatically.

Those statements are mutually exclusive.

It would probably be easier if you had installed Arch rather than Architect Linux.
wink

As pvsage notes, adjust your fstab accordingly.

Probably best to use rsync(1) for the actual copying.
