Blinking cursor after boot - Nvidia GPU issue? Need boot options?

Hello, I'm a new user of BL with some decent Linux experience.

I got a new desktop which got 2 SSDs. The first one where I installed Win10 and a second one where I'm trying to run BL. I installed BL via a USB key and the installation process seems to go fine.

GRUB was installed on the SSD where I intend to run BL. However, after finishing the installation and rebooting I choose this SSD and I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. After reading around the forums and other places it seems a problem with my Nvidia GPU? It seems it should be fixed via `nomodeset` when pressing TAB in the installation menu, but this didn't solve anything. Not sure if I should add that option elsewhere.

I've tried some other stuff like Ctrl + Alt + F2 or F1 to bring up a console or boot while holding the Shift key, but nothing seems to change?

Any help would be appreciated.

First off, have a read of https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

Have you installed nvidia-driver?

If you have an Optimus machine, then you will have BIOS options you can set: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers/Optimus.

In my case, after searching for a while, I found that I have to use the following boot parameter:

"acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2015\""

Also, please tell us what hardware you have.

No, don't think so. How can I install it if my screen just keeps a blinking cursor? Is this something I must do during the installation process?

Doing some searches on Google I couldn't find anything about this GPU having Optimus and my BIOS also does not show any options about it.

Here's my hardware setup:

Mobo: MSI B450 Tomahawk
CPU: AMD Ryzen 2700X
GPU: Nvidia RTX 2070
SSD #1: Samsung 970 Evo (Win 10 installed here)
SSD #2: Intel 545s (BL installed here)

My bad, I see you have a desktop, not a laptop. (Nice spec BTW )

NB I'm not a hardware guru, but until one steps in you could try these boot parameters:

nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0

Other possibilities are listed here, especially the xdriver section: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_set_up_kernel_options

A quick search suggests that the new RTX 2080 is a Turing card, which needs the Nvidia 410.x driver. This is only available in Debian sid at the moment, so BL Helium can't run it out-of-the-box.

The latest nouveau now supports Turing cards with Linux 5.0 apparently: Nouveau Open-Source Driver Will Now Work With NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti On Linux 5.0
