Would that be possible? I often forget to tick the checkbox and thus don't get any mail notifications about replies.

Technically yes but I won't implement this.

Less people subscribe with the option not being selected by default; inverting the option state would lead to more people subscribing and less people opting out. I do not believe it is desired to be subscribed to every thread one posts in.

I do not also want to force people to pay attention to the setting; if it's off your mind, you can forget about the option. The other way around, whenever you post, you'd have to consider unchecking the option, which I'd personally find bothersome.

o9000:  In my user Profile settings under Privacy there is an option entitled "Automatically subscribe to every topic you post in."  Have you tried setting this checkbox?
