That's sad.  It's said that blood is thicker than water, and while that's true one can choose their friends not their relatives.

I cringe when I hear "you have to respect him, he's your (insert family member type here).

HORSE FEATHERS!  Respect, no mater who, is something that must be earned.
I FEARED my father and stepfather - there was ZERO respect there!

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

Ok look, I admit it, I have no rights to be here as I am a spring chicken compared to you you guys. I am only 58. I wondered if I could perhaps become an honourary member?
I started on computers aged 13 at school on a teletype connected by accoustic coupler to Birmingham university (UK). Birmingham university taught me Mnemonic Assembly Language and BASIC, at age 14 I applied to a large corporation for a summer job in their computer centre. I was working as a Computer Operator on IBM 370/158's and 159's
they told me to apply for a job when I was 16 and they would employ me. Aged 16 I was in charge of the printers on the day shift - I operated the first laser printers in a commercial environment (as opposed to a test environment) in the UK. Aged 18 I became a computer operator working on shifts and spent my spare time and even stayed behind after work to test my COBOL and BASIC programs that I loved writing. I stayed in operations though as I preferred learning about the hardware and the operating system  rather than programming.

See this post, and this one.

AFAIAC you are welcome in the Club Lounge, but don't sit in the comfy chairs by the fire, and definitely don't eat my biscuits ( aka cookies! ) from the kitchen cupboard big_smile

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

Ok heres a question.
Back in the 1970's when I was just a little kid, our computer studies teacher said "By the time you kids grow up the computer industry is aiming to have a computer in every house", well we all fell about laughing and just could not accept that within 10, 15, 20 years, whatever, every house would have a computer system. This was because computer systems back then took up the size of a football field, besides, what on earth would anyone do with a computer in their house? Soooo, the question is, will there ever be a time when every household has quantum computers in them? will there ever be mobile quantum computers?

They would need to be mobile to stay above the rising sea level sad  We may have more important things to do than worry about personal QC's!

Mind you, if they can get them working at ambient temperature instead of churning out gigawatts of heat from the cooling systems, they may come up with a solution by using them, just in time hopefully smile

Re: The Over-the-Hill-BunsenGang Thread

damo has it right.  A a species we worry about the wrong things.  Money, position and power, and not necessarily in that order.

However, we laughed then, we marvelled that 640k was enough for everyone. So ... if we don't do ourselves in ... yea, it's possible that someone might figure it out.

Personally, I'd just prefer breathing clean air, doubt that will happen in my lifetime..

Yes.
Every household will be a quantum computer.
And much more you can't even begin to imagine.
