An alternative to having desktop icons is to not have any. (I'am guessing that for some decent icons one would need some plasma desktop....) But you can still partially enjoy your usual ~/Desktop folder concept with some sub-folders and some *.desktop launchers (as pipe menu).

Nice idea, but in fact, if you've got a Desktop folder it will already be available in the BL "Places" menu in the same way.
You can add Desktop (or any directory) to the top level menu by putting the path on as an argument:
<menu execute="bl-places-pipemenu ~/Desktop" id="pipe-desktopmenu" label="Desktop"/>
Copy /usr/bin/bl-places-pipemenu to ~/bin and you can edit it's behaviour a bit (see the comments).
