New Firefox cannot use PPAPI flash

Changes in the recent firefox-esr have made the PPAPI flash wrapper provided by browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash unusable in Debian Stretch:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=902256

The BunsenLabs package bunsen-pepperflash still works, but it is now only useful for Chrome or Chromium.

Version 0.3.9-1 of browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash in Debian Buster may fix this issue, but dependency on libavcodec58 (>= 7:4.0) may make backporting to Stretch difficult. However, now that Adobe are keeping the NPAPI flash plugin upgraded, then reverting to that is a usable workaround. The flashplayer plugin can be installed manually like this:

1) Go to Adobe's generic download page:
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
2) Choose your operating system (probably Linux 64 or 32 bit), and version "FP ** for Linux **bit (.tar.gz) - NPAPI"
(Make sure you choose tar.gz and NPAPI.)
3) Download the tar.gz file, unpack it and copy the included libflashplayer.so into your local ~/.mozilla/plugins. (Make the directory if necessary.) You do not need the other files.
4) Restart Firefox, open about:plugins and check that the Flash plugin is listed.

At BunsenLabs we might consider backporting browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash if it turns out not to be difficult, or providing an auto-upgrading package bunsen-npflash for Firefox by analogy with bunsen-pepperflash, and also updating the welcome script, but for now the manual install is a usable workaround.

And be sure only to enable Flash for sites you trust and that have no other options!

Re: New Firefox cannot use PPAPI flash

Backporting a newer freshplayer-plugin is not difficult.

If you rebuild it from source against Stretch's libavcodec57 3.2.10's -dev package, that's what it will depend on...these, for example, were built in generic Stretch pbuilders for MX 17: http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test … yerplugin/

Re: New Firefox cannot use PPAPI flash

^Thanks Steve - I'll give it a try, as that would be the least disruptive solution.
