new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

Hi everyone, I just did a clean install of bunsenlabs on a Thinkpad t410 and i've been getting some noticable problems such as screen flickering, and twice what I can only call a driver failure. This results in a black screen with a line of "jibbering"  pixels going vertically across the left side of the screen- requiring a reboot.

Even after killall compton it looks like theres still some graphics issues.

Heres some info off of the system

Graphics: Card: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)

any advice is appreciated, as always thanks for the read.

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

Are you seeing some messages related to the 'i915' driver or 'drm' when running 'dmesg'?If you're seeing some, it may help to upgrade the kernel to the latest available version from stretch-backports (4.18 branch).

Are you using compositing via compton (default)? Does the problem occur also after disabling compositing from the Openbox desktop menu?

Do you see the same problem when using a video player like VLC with the OpenGL-accelerated video output? (Tools>Preferences>Video>Output>OpenGL video output).

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

hi twoion -

Dmesg has a few red flags-

[drm:ironlake_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun
[ 1265.212111] [drm:ironlake_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[ 1355.600312]

No, via terminal I used "killall compton", AFAIK compton is default.

also a new thing- on vlc when I use the volume controls the screen flickers or "blinks".

oh! almost forgot- i've never had to upgrade the kernel before so this would be a new deal for me.

What version of kernel you have? A very good idea to upgrade the kernel as 4.9 in stretch is too old.

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

likely 4.9 this was just a install and update scenario so far

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

update-

so successfully updated to 4.17.0-0.bpo.3-amd64

there is a noticable lag between the login prompt after submit of login credentials and the Desktop Environment showing up; having not timed this but way longer than usual( lets say twenty seconds + ) any thoughts??

the gpu shows up as (HD Graphics 3000)

currently installed is-
xserver-xorg-video-intel/stable,now 2:2.99.917+git20161206-1 amd64 [installed]

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

First things first, the kernel upgrade has made loading the desktop successful, no flickering or crashes or other weirdness? If so, we can call this RESOLVED.

If the login lag only happened the first time you logged in, that is a known issue. Reboot, if the issue persists please open a new Help thread. Thanks!

Not sure if it's even an issue, though the lag does seem bigger than it was with Hydrogen. Anyway, stuff is being set up, and I don't think it's unusual for the first boot to take longer with other distros.

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

Debian is having your GPU use the kernel's built in modesetting driver.  If you want to try using the "intel" driver provided by xserver-xorg-video-intel, you have to create that 20-intel.conf file as detailed in that first Arch wiki link.

Stretch-backports also has newer Mesa packages that may improve either driver...or do nothing. It's vital for 8th-gen Intel graphics, though.

It seems that some Intel hardware does better with the modesetting driver, some better with the intel.  For my 8th-gen UHD 630 Coffee Lake Intel GPU, I had some problems with the modesetting driver, even with 4.17 kernels and 18.1 Mesa packages, and even a backport of the latest "intel" in Sid was buggy, but I found that a git pull and build of the Intel source back in July fixed the bugs.  Sid now has an even more recent version from the end of August that can be backported, too.

Re: new install - screen flickering and screen failure on intel i915

hi again- I had some success with making the 20-intel.conf and the i915.conf on the laptop yesterday- after a reboot ive had some successes.

As for that boot lag- that was happening after multiple recurring reboots, not just after first install to bl-welcome ( thats expected ) this is no longer an issue currently.

After doing some tests there is a screen flicker on vlc when raising or lowering the volume control (via hardware switch). Not quite done yet with the machine as doing some tweaks on the config files as one of them made my screen go completely black, and had to revert changes.

here is a current output of inxi -G

Card: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:0046
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: intel Resolution: 1440x900@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ironlake Mobile GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 13.0.6 Direct Rendering: Yes

it was originally set to modesetting but after the files got changed and a reboot- its now listing as intel.

@stevep-
I'll have to look into the build or sid august update further as I never really did that before.
Ill keep at it. Thanks for the input thus far everyone.

@i33te if the issue is resolved, could you go back and edit the first post, adding [SOLVED] to the title?
