I was using simple-scan without problems. It hasn't been working for a few months. I would like to see if I can get it going before I replace it. Would appreciate help; don't know what to look for.

Not detected means:
1) System up and running and youy plug in scanner cable and scanner is not detected
or
2) scanner cable already connected when you boot up and scanner not detected?
Reason for asking: I used 1) above for many years with no issues but sometime during the last 12 months it stopped working. I found that always having the scanner connected a la 2) above solved my problem.
My scanner is an Epson Perfection 2400 Photo so quite old by now.

I leave the scanner connected through USB. I usually turn on the machine when I want to scan. Today I had it turned on while I booted the computer, but it was the same: It failed to detect a scanner.
